  2. WORLD WIDE WEB A part of the Internet that is unique because of its GUI and use of hyperlinks (WWW = Web Pages) GUI = Graphical User Interface

  3. HYPERLINKS Words, pictures, or buttons that connect you to other web pages; The pointer icon will usually turn into a hand when placed over a link

  4. HTML Stands for : “Hypertext Markup Language” Computer Programming “language” used to create web pages. Tags are command words that appear in brackets <>

  5. HTTP Stands for “Hypertext Transfer Protocol” Basic computer rules that allow for the linking and transferring of Web pages and graphics http://www.google.com/

  6. MODEM • A piece of hardware that allows your computer to access the Internet • You may have a CABLE MODEM in your house • Some modems are wireless

  7. BROWSER Any computer software that can be used to view documents on the Internet Ex: Internet Explorer, Safari, Firefox, Opera,Google Chrome

  8. INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (ISP) Collections of networked computers that provide content to subscribers (The company you pay for Internet Access) Ex. Verizon FiOS, Comcast

  9. DIRECTORY A web site offering categorizedlistings of other Web sites that have been evaluated by a person

  10. SEARCH ENGINE • An AutomatedWeb site that uses advanced searching software to locate other Web sites and Internet files • Results, or “hits”, are not evaluated by a person

  11. URL • Stands for Uniform Resource Locator • The format for a Web address • http://www.google.com • Protocol://www.server name .domain type Domains: com=commercial, net=network, org=organization, gov=government, edu=education, mil=military
