  1. Chapter 1 Notes What is Science

  2. I. Science science comes from the latin word scire“ to know” A.Theories and Laws

  3. Scientific Theory and Scientific Law (Answer Key) Both Theory and Law Scientific Theory Scientific Law 1) Tested hypothesis 2) Supported by large amount of data 1) Chemistry and Physics have more of these 1) Biology has more of these 3) Helps unify a field of study 2) Describes what nature does under certain conditions (usually with a mathematical formula) 2) Explains how nature works 4) Can be modified if even 1 peer-reviewed experiment produces data showing disagreement 5) Widely accepted by a vast majority (if not all) scientists within a discipline

  4. Scientific Theory and Scientific Law • Scientific Theory usually describes a phenomenon seen in nature. • Scientific Law usually explains how a process works under a given set of conditions with a mathematical formula. BOTH are proven true through continuous experimentation! New cells form from existing cells Force is the product of an object’s mass and acceleration

  5. The speed of light in a vacuum is constant and an absolute physical boundary for motion Question: Mass can come from energy and energy from mass (E= mc2) Is this a scientific theory or a scientific law? Scientific LAW Is this a scientific theory or a scientific law? Part of the THEORY of relativity

  6. Question: Is a scientific theory or a scientific law more correct? Trick question! Both are equally proven to be true through continuous experimentation.

  7. A.Theories and Laws *Theory- describes something observed in nature *Law- explains how a process works (usually an equation involved)

  8. B.Scientific Method • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8wi0QnYN6s&index=2&list=PLIRCOr8Z3UMVdcoz1mZfkij29HpBSB5k_ • Video: #50 (times and troubles)

  9. B.Scientific Method * a systematic approach to solving a problem (pp13) 1. State the problem 2. Gather information 3. Form hypothesis 4. Perform experiments 5. Record and analyze data 6. State conclusion

  10. Scientific Method cont. * hypothesis- educated prediction * Variable(I. & D.)- the one factor that is being tested * Experimental setup- the part that contains the I. variable * Control setup- same as ES, but does not contain the I. variable

  11. Scientific Method cont * Data- recorded observations and measurements

  12. Branches of Physical Science pp 6 * Chemistry- study of what substances are made of and how they change and combine * Physics- study of forms of energy and the laws of motion - prefixes

  13. II. Scientific Measurements pp 15-19 * Metric System- standard system of science A. Length - basic unit is meter B. Volume - basic unit is liter/ 1ml=1cc C. Mass- basic unit is gram

  14. Scientific Measurements D. Density- mass/volume E. Temperature- Celsius F. Dimensional Analyst- worksheet

  15. III. Tools of Measurement A. Length B. Mass C. Volume D. Temperature
