  2. What is the Social Gospel? • “Ministering to the whole man” • A little distortion can make a spiritual gospel with social by-products into a social gospel with spiritual by-products

  3. What is the Social Gospel? • Use Luke 2:53 for “authority” • “Wisdom” – mental growth, authority for schools • “stature” – physical growth, authority for gymnasiums • “favor with God” – spiritual growth, authority for Bible teaching • “favor with man” – social growth, authority for kitchens, fellowship halls, etc.

What is the Social Gospel? • Manifest by presence of: • Church hospitals • Fellowship Halls • Kitchens • Family Life Centers, • Recreational Activities • Sports Teams • Gymnasiums • Singles Groups • Counseling Services • Schools & Daycare Centers • Low Rent Housing for the Elderly • Disaster Relief Agencies

  5. How Did The “Social Gospel” Get Into the Church? • Social Gospel carnal focus & emphasis on Man, all at God’s expense • “Institutional church” – desire to organize committees, departments, experts, ministries & services “to cover the entire life of man” emerged from Social Gospel Philosophy

What Effect Has “Social Gospel” Had on The Church? • Institutions for Social Service built & attached to churches • Staff includes Every Kind of “minister” found in denominational churches • Building include kitchens, banquet facilities, family life centers, gymnasiums. • Attentions & affections to “material” rather than “spiritual”

What Effect Has “Social Gospel” Had on The Church? • Colossians 3:1-3 “If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” • Matthew 6:33 "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

Church a Spiritual Body of Saved People With a Spiritual Mission • Church has a Spiritual Mission: • Supply the Needs of Those in Its Number who may be in need- • Jerusalem church relieved by churches in Macedonia, Achaia & Galatia • 1 Corinthians 16:1-3; 2Corinthians 8 & 9; Romans 15:25ff • “that there might be equality…”

  15. The Mission of the Church is NOT: • Political – John 18:33-35 • Romans 13:11-17; 1 Peter 2:13-17 • Economical – 1 Timothy 6:5 • 1 Corinthians 16:1,2; 2 Corinthians 9:7 • Educational (human Wisdom)- • 1 Corinthians 1:20,21 • 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

  16. The Mission of the Church is NOT: • Social - Better Slave / Master 1 Corinthians 7:20-22 • Romans 14:17 “not eating & Drinking” • Acts 2:22 • John 20:30,31 • Reason Jesus Fed 5,000 NOT to encourage them to hear – compassion on them (Matt. 14:15,16)

  17. The Mission of the Church is NOT: • Social - Better Slave / Master 1 Corinthians 7:20-22 • Reason Jesus Fed 4,000 NOT to encourage them to hear – compassion on them (Matt. 15:32) • John 6:26 “because you ate of the loaves & were filled.” • John 6:27 Jesus rebukes them • John 6:60-66

The Mission of the Church is NOT: • Social - Better Slave / Master 1 Corinthians 7:20-22 • Gospel God’s Drawing Power to Call Men- 2 Thessalonians 2:14 • Romans 1:16 • Always ask: “Are these things worthy of the blood of Jesus Christ?” (Ephesians 5:25; Acts 20:28) • 1 Corinthians 11:22,33,34; Acts 2:46

  20. No Man/Men has/have the right to divert the energy, strength, zeal or resources of the church of the Lord to serve Human Aims or Purposes We Must let the church be distinct as the church, so adorned as to glorify the Head, even Jesus the Christ
