  1. Integrated Asset Planning for Nuclear Power Plants Matt Kohal Southern California Edison

  2. Speaker Bio • Matt Kohal • Work Control Project Controls Manager • 30 years at SONGS NPP • Expertise in: • Integrated work management • Outages • Scheduling • Systems Integration • SAP system experience since initial SONGS SAP rollout

  3. SONGS History • SONGS (San Onofre Nuclear Generation Station) • Southern California Edison • Located in San Clemente, Southern California • Pressurized water reactors with commission dates listed • Unit 1: Jan 1, 1968 – decommissioned in 1992 • Twin Reactor Unit 2: August 8, 1983 • Twin Reactor Unit 3: April 1, 1984 San Onofre

  4. SONGS Nuclear Station Site

  5. SONGS Nuclear Summary • Two twin reactor units - in commission • Southern California’s largest and most reliable sources of electricity • Jointly owned by SCE, San Diego Gas & Electric, and the city of Riverside • The units can generate almost 2,400 megawatts of power, enough to meet the needs of nearly 1.5 million average homes

  6. SONGS Complex Environment

  7. STO • Outages are the preferred term for STO • Frequency is once every 18 months • Involves entire regular plant staff • Contractor staff is 1,000+ during outage • Typical planned duration has been 60 - 90 days • P6 Project Model contains 20,000+ activities • Outage planning is an ongoing effort year ‘round

  8. Integrated Planning and STO Integrated Asset Planning: A holistic approach to planning and scheduling that centralizes all asset-impacting work activities from all sources into a single integrated plan.

  9. Technical Overview • Software Systems • SAP implementation started three years ago • Current SONGS SAP version is ECC 6 • Prior system was a custom in-house client/server system • Implemented SAP PM for asset management • Pipeline Maxavera (SAP PM <-> Primavera P6 integration) • Primavera P6 for scheduling (release 7 SP 1)

  10. SONGS Business Groups • Business Groups • Outage Management team (Outage Control Center) • Operations team • Maintenance team • Scheduling team • Contractors • And many other Support Groups

  11. Approach • Solution • Maxavera integration solution from Pipeline Software • Integrated planning approach • Preferred a packaged solution approach • High performance for data volumes • Support for key systems - SAP and Primavera • Scenario templates for outages, online maintenance, and capital

  12. SONGS Scenario Sample • SONGSexample for data fields and round trip process • Scenario #1: SAP PM – Primavera P6 • Scenario #2: Primavera P6 – SAP PM

  13. Work Orders updated to Primavera Operations Activities - Schedule Data - Durations, Dates - Effort - Planned Work, Remaining Work - Work Center - Resource Assignment - Relations - Relationships - Confirmations - Actual Work / Time Sub-Operations Resource Assignments - Work Center - Resource - Schedule Data - Durations, Dates Work Centers Resources - Descriptions - Descriptions - Capacities - Calendar & Availability Scenario - Planner Sends SAP Work Orders to Primavera for scheduling and resource assignment SAP PM PRIMAVERA

  14. P6 Schedule Data updated to SAP Operations Activities - Early Start - Planned Start Date - Early Finish - Planned Finish Date - Work Center - Resource - Number of Capacities - Planned Units Per Time • Sub-Operations Resource Assignments • - Duration - Duration • - Work Center - Resource • - Number of Capacities - Planned Units Per Time Scenario - Scheduler schedules activities and resources with dates in Primavera and sends back to SAP SAP PM PRIMAVERA

  15. Integrated Planning • Delivery Process • Structured methodology to each rollout from Pipeline- positive, predictable results • Pipeline onsite solution blueprint workshop • Offsite configuration by Pipeline • Close coordination between SONGS and Pipeline teams • Shared testing activities before go-live

  16. Work Clearances • Work Clearances integration • Integrated Asset Planning encompasses additional systems such as work clearances, safety, and permitting • Maxavera was used to establish unique integration for SAP Work Clearances module with Primavera P6

  17. Work Efficiency • Work Efficiency Component (SAP WEC) integration • SAP WEC is used for nuclear companies and contains outage data fields, outages codes, regulatory fields, and OMs (outage mode codes) • Maxavera was used to established unique integration for SAP WEC module with Primavera

  18. Integrated Planning • Integrated asset planning can save time, money, and resources during STOs • High performance processing • Automate data transfers • Establish common processes • Reduce (or eliminate) manual data steps • Reduce (or eliminate) double data entry

  19. Integrated Planning • Business process improvements that customers can use to provide accurate forecasting across the corporation • Reduce (or eliminate) data quality mistakes and errors • Better align planning team to establish the approved work with scheduling team • Leverage key systems such as SAP as system of record • Reduce miscommunications

  20. Integrated Planning • Best practices for improving resource utilization during routine and STO work types • Comprehensive project view with integrated data • Composite view including work, costs, and detailed schedules • Reduce un-needed meetings, calls, emails, etc. • Better data enables better decisions

  21. Summary • Key Take-Aways • Outage performance can be improved and risks reduced with an integrated asset planning approach • SAP PM – Primavera P6 integration can be delivered well, using the right partner, Pipeline Software • Save time and effort by using a packaged system for planning and scheduling integration
