  1. The Love / Hate Relationship with Mobility Dale Wickizer Chief Technology Officer U.S. Public Sector NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  2. BYOD?? How’d That Happen? • Expectations vs. Risks • What Are You Going to Do? How Can NetApp Help? NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  3. What is BYOD? • It’s about letting users access their data when and where they want: • “"BYOD" is not about being an expert on every mobile device in the world; it's about giving workers secure access to the apps and data they need on whatever device they are using.“ – Interview with Dell CIO Carol Fawcett, CIO Magazine 12/5/12 • It is really a data access and management issue NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  4. It All Started with the “Millennials…” • At least that’s who most folks blame… • People in their 20’s and 30’s • Coming from open, collaborative university social networks • Access to the latest technologies, especially mobile devices • They depend on these devices for social interaction • Untethered…working wherever they want. • Then they get a job…and the reality of the work place…well…not what they expected! NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  5. So They Start Bringing Their Own Tech… • Many of them ignore organizational policies about privacy and security of data Your CISO “Blurred Lines in the Mobile Enterprise Information Landscape”, Ipsos MORI, Huddle, 2013, http://bit.ly/189fSGx NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  6. Next Thing You Know … The boundaries between work and personal life are blurred! NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  7. That Drives New Expectations… • Users want apps and services that are: • Cheap or free • Always ON • Work the same across all mobile devices • Intuitive to use • Organizations want • Users who are productive, but respect policies • Data that is secure and compliant • Services they can maintain inexpensively • To properly manage risk NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  9. The Point? You Need A Mobile Strategy(A.k.a, “Resistance Is Futile”) • About 125 million U.S. consumers own smartphones, 50 million own tablets. • ComScore's"2013 Mobile Future in Focus" report, http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Presentations_and_Whitepapers/ http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns341/ns525/ns537/ns705/ns827/white_paper_c11-520862.html http://www.checkpoint.com/press/2012/011812-check-point-businesses-admit-increase-security.html NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  10. Mobile Information Management Strategy What Is MIM? • Providing users access to corporate content safely, securely • Adherence to existing access privileges, policies • Security from multiple aspects(more than simply network security) • Encrypted data transfer • Device local storage encryption • Password protection • Remote wipe of device

  11. NetApp Mobile Information Management Strategy • Leverage NetApp’s strength in understanding how customers access data • Strong history of partnerships • Including VMware®, Citrix® and others • Focus on providing reliable, secure access to corporate data • Clustered Data ONTAP® is the foundation for non-disruptive access to data, regardless of device NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  12. Key Strengths of 3 Mobile Solutions NetApp®Connect • Data access, presentation and annotation • Leverage existing IT and Data ONTAP infrastructure Citrix® ShareFile® • Data access, collaboration, file sharing and syncing • Seamless integration in Citrix ecosystem • Integrated with Data ONTAP data management VMware® Horizon Workspace™ • Applications, desktop, and data virtualization • Seamless integration in VMware ecosystem NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  13. Guiding the Conversation • If focus is on content consumption, presentation and annotation then start with NetAppConnect • If focus is on collaboration, sharing and syncing then start with Citrix ShareFile • If focus is on virtualizing workspaces then start with VMware Horizon • Solutions are not mutually exclusive • Customers may deploy NetApp Connect and Citrix or VMware products to meet different needs and existing infrastructure NetApp Confidential - Internal Use Only

  21. Benefit of Connect vs. File Sync Solutions NetApp® Connect offers • No data migration • Clients can access data immediately • Integrates with existing Microsoft® AD/LDAP • No need to create new user accounts • Means no significant changes in • Policies and procedures • Permissions, auditing • Data protection • Management from a company server and storage administration aspect does not change

  22. Connect and Windows Clients • Connect and Windows® clientsaccess the same data • Immediate access when mobile is added Mike ConnectServer Mobile Client Laptop or Desktop Client NetApp® FAS SharePoint® CIFS Shares

  23. Data Migration with File Sync Solutions • File sync solutions often use an object store format for storage of files and metadata • Requires changing primary location and format of files • All data for mobile has to be migrated into the new storage format • Sync solutions typically require users to log in to their cloud servers for access to data

  24. Typical File Sync Solutions Authentication with Third Party Cloud (Third-Party Data Center) Sync file to local copy and edit or view, sync back to new format On Premises (Company Data Center) Private Cloud Server Mobile Client Mike Laptop or Desktop Client 1 2 3 Previous location of data is no longer current, existing enterprise access no longer applies NetApp® FAS New Storage Format CIFS Shares Control path First, migrate data from network shares to new sync storage Data path

  25. Deployment Details

  26. NetApp Connect Overview The solution has two primary components • Client app runs on mobile device • Connect server at company data center inside corporate network • Connect server is modular for scalability • Interfaces with a separate secure broker server located in the DMZ • Fully on-premises solution

  27. NetApp Connect App • Secure viewing of office documents • Remote access to data with security focus • Available for download in the app store • Free download • Needs server connection for functionality • Device and iOS version support on IMT TIP Download the app and use the cloud-hosted getting started content for a quick intro.

  28. NetApp Connect Server • Available from the NetApp® Support Downloads section • Documentation on the NetApp Support site • Runs on Windows Server®, typically virtualized • Web management interface: the dashboard • Highly scalable solution

  31. Adding Clients • Provisioning a client is the process of adding a client so that identities are known from certificates, establishes initial trust • Provisioning is simply sending a URL via email that points a client to the external broker and realm to access • All communications are encrypted

  33. Highlights of Client Features • Secure container for viewing company data • Offline file access • Thumbnail page view • Search within files • Annotations: shared and private • Send files to other apps • Receive files from other apps (save files) • More features and details in the client documentation on the NetApp® Support site
