  1. Student Ambassador Program

  2. History • Carol Elam, Ed.D., and then first year medical student Joe Thomas created the program in 2009. • The goal was to inspire/mentor rural high school students and encourage them to pursue medicine as a career.

  3. Counties & Ambassadors • 20 counties and 23 ambassadors were involved in the first year of the program

  4. Goals • Encourage middle and high school students to attend college and consider a career in medicine. • Educate students about opportunities to practice in rural areas and improve rural health. • Promote the University of Kentucky health colleges, specifically the College of Medicine.

  12. A Word from Medical Students

Goals for the Year • Utilize new teaching tools (knee, clinical activities, etc.) • Collaborate with alumni in rural areas to encourage students to pursue a career in medicine or other health field • Develop interdisciplinary teleconferences with other health colleges (e.g., Public Health, Health Sciences) to explain more health career options to students. • Collaborate with KSRHA to host a lecture series relevant to healthcare professional students

  14. Future Directions • Evaluation of the program– Follow students to see if/when they apply to medical school or another health college • Develop funding/support model to advance the program • Work with AHECs to develop workshops where ambassadors can talk with guidance counselors and teachers about the program, medical school, and reaching students who could succeed in medical school
