  1. Antioch (Pisidia) Iconium Antioch Seleucia Perga Salamis Paphos

  2. Acts 14:1-7

  3. At Iconium Acts 14:1ff • 1. And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude both of the Jews and also of the Greeks believed. • 2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil affected against the brethren. • 3 Long time therefore abode they speaking boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony unto the word of his grace, and granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.

  4. 4 But the multitude of the city was divided: and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. • 5 And when there was an assault made both of the Gentiles, and also of the Jews with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them, • 6 They were ware of it, and fled unto Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and unto the region that lieth round about:

  5. Persecution goes with preaching

  6. Persecution against those preaching the gospel • 1. Jesus had prophesied this to be. Matt. 5:11-12 • “Blessed are you when men shall revile you and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely,for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

  7. Persecution common for God’s people • Hebrews 11:35 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: • 36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: • 37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

  8. 38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth. • 39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: • 40 God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

  9. Despite that, Men still preach the Gospel

  10. Acts 14:7 • 7 And there they preached the gospel.

  11. Where did Paul go to preach and when? • In the synagogues, on the Sabbath day… • At Salamis: Acts 13:5 “And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: “ • At Antioch in Pisidia , Acts 13:14 “But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.”

  12. On the Sabbath day…. • Acts 13:14 “on the sabbath day,they went into the synagogue …(Antioch of Pisidia) • Acts 13:44 “and the next sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of God. • Acts 16:13 “And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a riverside,where (Lydia)

  13. Acts 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and 3 Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures.” • Acts 18:4, 11 And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath…”and he continued there a year and 6 months, teaching the word of God among them ..

  14. All churches teach one of 4 positions on the day of Christian worship: • 1. True position taught in the Bible…that the Sabbath was abolished at the cross and Christians have worshipped since the cross, on the first day of the week- Sunday. Acts 20:7; I Cor. 16:1-3;

  15. 2. The false position taught by Sabbatarians that Saturday is the day of Christian worship

  16. 3. The false position taught by the Catholic church that the Pope changed the day Christians worship from Sat. to Sunday

  17. 4.The false position taught by most Protestant churches that Sunday is the Christian Sabbath

  18. “The first day of the week is commonly called the Sabbath. This is a mistake. The • Sabbath of the Bible was the day just preceding the first day of the week. The first day of the week is never called the Sabbath anywhere in the entire Scriptures. • It is also an error to talk about the change of the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. There is not in any place in the Bible any intimation of such a change.” Alexander Campbell,First Day Observance, pp. 17,19

  19. Some say that it was changed from the seventh to the first day. • Where? • When? • And by Whom?

  20. Brethren: No it never was changed, nor could it be! It is the 7th day . • Adam nor Abraham ever kept the Sabbath day as a day of worship. It was day • Exclusively between God, Moses and the • Jews!

  21. When Paul was preaching , • The Sabbath was the day that the Jews • Were keeping, and that is where he went • To teach them . • He would then meet with God’s people on the first day of the week to break bread. • Acts 20:7
