  1. LDC Task Do’s & Don’ts The emphasis is on learning content and skills. Thinking and problem solving are learned with content. (Chall)

  2. Teaching Task: By 1809, which party’s goals had prevailed in American politics: the Federalists or the Democratic-Republicans? After reading primary source documents, write an essay that addresses the question and supports your position with evidence from the documents. Be sure to acknowledge competing views. Give examples from historical events to illustrate and clarify your position.

  3. Prompt: Was it beneficial or harmful for Europeans to explore the New World and begin the Trans-Atlantic Trade? After reading and viewing various documents on the reasons that the Europeans came to the New World, write an essay that discusses the Trans-Atlantic Trade and evaluates the impact on Europe. Support your position with evidence from your readings.

  4. Better? How did the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade affect the American Colonies’ economic status? After reading and viewing the documents provided, write an essay that discusses the economics of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and evaluates the impact on the New World Colonies. Support your position with evidence from your reading.

  5. How does the literature of Great Britain and of its colonies reveal the relationship between and across them, specifically as it relates to the concept of E/empire? After reading and researching a variety of texts and media (essays, poems, songs, film) written by British and British colonials, choose two texts to analyze and write an essay that addresses the question and analyzes the issues raised by authors from Great Britain and its colonies in regard to E/empire, providing examples to illustrate and clarify your analysis. What conclusion or implications can you draw? Include a bibliography of your sources.

  6. What is Marquez’s view of knowledge and literature? How is this view communicated and what is its effect on you as a reader? After reading One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, segments of his biography, and other sources, write a commentary that addresses the question and support your position with evidence from the text. Be sure to acknowledge competing views.

  7. How do authors use character relationships in a story to develop theme? After reading Hamlet and related texts, write an essay that explains how the relationship between Hamlet and another character illustrates an important theme in this tragedy. What conclusions or implications can you draw? Cite at least two sources, pointing out key elements from each source. Include a bibliography of your sources.
