  3. Introduction • Electronic Mail Server, often abbreviated as email server or e-mail server, is a computer within the network which provides the facilities of a post office to its users. Email servers accept, forward, deliver and store messages. • It allows sender to send mail to one or more receivers within a matter of seconds. • Initially the network-based email transmission used the File Transfer Protocol (FTP), but today it is governed by the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). • E-mail systems are primarily based on a store-and-forward model, which enables the computer server to accept, forward, deliver and store messages.
