  1. NATALIA COLICHONCHAPTER THREE

  2. Tony onHappiness • Tony is thinking and wandering about the three types of happy people, the whiners, the happy wanderers and the Gary Cooper style. • Tony hates the whiners because they represent the typical Americans that can only cry around. In contrast he kind like feels animosity toward the happy wanderers because he sometimes has to use this happy feeling. • Nevertheless his favorite type are the Gary Cooper Style, because this type of people represent his father. • A very interesting analysis that can be set back is the ideal that Socrates and Nathaniel Hawthorne have about happiness. They clearly confess that happiness is a matter of achieving unity in oneself. This means that people cannot be happy if they show one personality to everybody and in reality they have a different personality. • Aristotle taught Alexander the Great that “happiness and greatness are related, and that happiness can be achieved only through peace and unity in oneself”.

  3. TheAncientsonHappiness and Tony and theRest of Us • Happiness is a matter of achieving a group of things and is up to each person if it can be achieved. • Also not even a nice family, lots of friends, wealth, reputation, honor, and living long can ward off unhappiness. • To live a happy life requires a conscious effort to revise and integrate the goals we have picked up from a common sense understanding of what makes life good.

  4. HappinessrequiresIntegratedmotivation • In order to achieve happiness we need to reflect in our actions what we really are. • The importance is the ability to introspect like Kinkergaard expressed. • Like Tony expresses, that mob activity is done because he has to support his family. • Also a person who operates with inconsistent motivation is like in Civil War, Plato expressed this. • That is why Tony is never well, he is always exhausted and is never compelled into realization for his own life. Hegel said:”Lack of operating according to what is said.” • To avoid suffering people must find the motivation that integrates our pursuits, and we must drop any activities that cannot be integrated with the others.

  5. ObjectionstotheintegratedMotivations View • Motivations do not have to do anything with our morals. • Need to protect others and one. • Hegel expressed that life was a duality for example: Our motivations can drag us away of our morals, or morals can drag us away of our motivations.

  6. Gary Cooper • Gary Cooper cannot be messed up with. • Like Gary Cooper, Tony cannot be messed up with. The problem is that Tony cannot control himself. • Vengeance is an example of lack of control, Tony is weak and this drives him to seek for vengeance. • Happiness is a path that can be achieved if people learn to have control over them.
