  2. 1984 • Written during the Cold War • George Orwell wrote this book in 1948 as a prediction of what the future would hold

  3. Setting • Oceana – Britain (Orwell’s homeland) the U.S.A. and others • Eurasia – Soviet Union and it’s neighbors • Eastasia – China and it’s neighbors

  4. Imaginary Societies Utopia • A place of ideal perfection in laws, government, and social conditions.

  5. Imaginary Societies Dystopia • A place where everything is as bad as it can be.

  6. Government • Socialism– a theory of government in which all members of society share equally in the production and distribution of goods. • Totalitarian – a system of government in which all aspects of people’s lives are strictly controlled by their leaders.

  7. Propaganda • Propaganda is a form of communication that is aimed towards influencing the attitude of a community toward some cause or position by presenting only one side of an argument. Propaganda is usually repeated and dispersed over a wide variety of media in order to create the chosen result in audience attitudes.

  8. Used during WWII to influence women into the workforce.

  9. Used in WWI to influence young men to join the Army.

  10. Used to influence young men to serve on submarines, which was (and still is) an undesirable duty station.
