  1. What Does the Research Say About . . . High-Performing, High-Poverty Schools

  2. Think-Pair-Share Revisited You’ve heard of Think-Pair-Share or TPS Today, we’ll be using Read-Think-Ink-Pair-Pair-Pair-Share or RTIPPPS You’ll be given a document entitled, “Convergence in the Research on High-Performing, High-Poverty (HP2) Schools” [Guess where you can find this document if you need a digital copy of it??? ;-)] You’ll also be assigned a number between 1 and 14.

  3. Step 1: Read Read the “Convergence Factor” row that has been assigned to you. Underline any words or phrases that jump out at you. You’ll have 3 minutes

  4. Step 2: Think In your mind (silently), prepare a 30-second speech describing your “Convergence Factor” You’ll have 2 minutes

  5. Step 3: Ink Prepare a quick-write about what this convergence factor would look like in practice. You’ll have 2 minutes

  6. Step 4: Pair With an elbow partner, share your 30-second speech and then allow your partner to give examples of where they’ve seen that convergence factor. Take notes as the other person speaks and paraphrase what they said to ensure that you understood correctly. Switch roles with your partner. You’ll each have 3 minutes

  7. Step 5: Pair With an eye-contact partner, share your 30-second speech and then allow your partner to give examples of where they’ve seen that convergence factor. Take notes as the other person speaks and paraphrase what they said to ensure that you understood correctly. Switch roles with your partner. You’ll each have 3 minutes

  8. Step 6: Pair With a partner you’d never met before today, share your 30-second speech and then allow your partner to give examples of where they’ve seen that convergence factor. Take notes as the other person speaks and paraphrase what they said to ensure that you understood correctly. Switch roles with your partner. You’ll each have 3 minutes

  9. Step 7: Share We’ll go around from 1-14 and have each person share 1 or 2 examples of what they found out. You’ll each have 2 minutes to share out your 30-second speech and 1 or 2 examples

  10. Step 8: Socratic Seminar Circle Up! It’s time for a Socratic Seminar. Here are the rules: • Speak loudly and clearly • Listen carefully to others and paraphrase when possible • No need to raise hands • Refer to the text • Talk to each other, not the facilitator • Ask for clarification if you’re confused • Consider all viewpoints and presume positive intentions • Pause before moving to another topic to see if there are any final words

  11. Step 8: Socratic Seminar This conversation belongs to you, but here are some potential Socratic Seminar topics: Which of the Convergence Factors is/are most important? Which of the Convergence Factors is/are within the teacher’s control? Which of the Convergence Factors is/are the strongest at my school? What Convergence Factor(s), if any, did the researchers disagree on? Which researcher would you like to read more about? Does this research align with “What does the research say about . . .” presentations at previous DSLN meetings? Which of these Convergence Factors would you like to learn more about at future DSLN meetings? You’ll have 10 minutes
