  2. Poetry Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language choices so as to evoke an emotional response. Poetry has been known to employ meter and rhyme, but this is by no means necessary. Poetry is an ancient form that has gone through numerous and drastic reinvention over time. The very nature of poetry as an authentic and individual mode of expression makes it nearly impossible to define.

  3. Couplet Two-lined poems with a fun and simple rhyming pattern. Each line has the same number of syllables and their endings must rhyme with one another. Humor is often used in couplets.

  4. Examples • Little Daddy Longlegs played in the sun,Climbing up the front steps just for fun. • Tomorrow's my birthday and I'll be fourAnd I won't have to stay home anymore. • Nature puts on little showsEvery time it rains or snows. • Look at all the pumpkin facesLighting up so many places.

  5. Haiku • Haiku is a Japanese poem with no rhyme. Haiku poems have only three lines, each with a certain number of syllables. Here is the pattern: • Line 1 = 5 syllables Line 2 = 7 syllables Line 3 = 5 syllables

  6. Examples • Nature HaikuGreen grass in AprilBirds begin to sing in treesChildren playing outsideBy Sean • Butterflies hatch.Bees drink the juice from flowers.Bees fly everywhere.By Andrea

  7. Tanka Poem • A form of Japanese poetry that depends on the number of lines and syllables instead of rhyme. The pattern is: • Line 1 = 5 syllables Line 2 = 7 syllables Line 3 = 5 syllables Line 4 = 7 syllables Line 5 = 7 syllables

  8. Examples • Saying Goodbye Carefully I walkTrying so hard to be braveThey all see my fearDark glasses cover their eyesAs mine flow over with tears
