  4. Square Deal All policy created as a result of President Roosevelt that uphold the best interest of consumers and workers in the Progressive Movement.

Social Reforms • Sherman Anti – Trust Act: A law enacted in 1890 that was intended to prevent the creation of monopolies by making it illegal to establish trusts that interfered with free trade. • Legalized a graduated federal income tax, which provided revenue by taxing individual earnings and corporate profits. • Pure Food and Drug Act: Law that required truthful labels.

Social Reforms • Meat Inspection Act: Promoted by the publication of Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle” • Passed by Teddy Roosevelt after he read “The Jungle” • Roosevelt also promoted conservation of natural resources by creating national parks. • He was founding force behind and candidate of the Progressive Party in 1912 which split the Republican Party and gave the election to Woodrow Wilson

Woodrow Wilson • Clayton Anti – Trust Act: Allowed labor unions to be exempt from the Anti – Trust laws. • 16th Amendment – Legalized a graduated federal income tax, which provided revenue by taxing individual earnings and corporate profits. • The federal government had to replace the revenue that tariffs had previously supplied.

  8. Woodrow Wilson • 17th Amendment (1913) – provides for the election of US senators by the people rather than by state legislatures. This is for the benefit of ordinary citizens. • The Federal Reserve Act – Central banking system of the U.S. • And granted it the legal authority to issue U.S. dollars.
