  3. In 1990, Iraq invaded oil-rich Kuwait, which started the Persian Gulf War. Iraq’s president Saddam Hussein (1979–2003)

  4. In 1991, President George H. W. Bush committed U.S. troops to the Persian Gulf War to help fight back Iraq and assure the flow of Middle East oil to the U.S. and its allies. Operation Desert Storm (over 500,000 U.S. troops committed, largest since Vietnam); within 1 month of the U.S. entering the Persian Gulf War, Iraq withdrew from Kuwait
