  2. Who is the Holy Spirit? • Jehovah’s Witnesses: “God’s Radar Beam” • One of Many Manifestations of God Manifestation = How God Appears or Operates in the World • Part of God Himself Which “View” Is Scripturally Correct?

  3. The Father IS 1 Cor. 1:3 IS NOT IS NOT 1 John 1:3 Matt 3:16-17 GOD IS IS Acts 5:3-4 John 1:1-14 The Son Jesus The Holy Spirit John 14:16 IS NOT The Godhead

  4. The Godhead The Father… The Son… & The Holy Spirit • Distinct & Separate Spiritual Beings • Existing Together as Deity – the One God • United in Purpose and Will

  5. The Scriptures Prove: • The Holy Spirit is a Living Spiritual Being – not an idea, a thing, or just a part of the Father. • The Holy Spirit has intelligence, feelings, and behavior consistent with a sentient, rational being.

  6. Sentient Being: • Conscious, aware • Having senses • Able to experience by feeling & perception Rational Being = Thinking Being • Perception and Cognition • Comprehension, understanding, memory • Reason, judgment, decision, action

  10. The Holy SpiritPart 1 - Being & Behavior Traits of The Holy Spirit

  11. The Holy Spirit has the traits of a rational being: • He has awareness or a mind (Romans 8:27) • He has understanding and knowledge (1 Corinthians 2:11) • He demonstrates intent & will (1 Corinthians 12:11)

  12. Romans 8:26-27 • Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. • Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

  13. 1 Corinthians 2:9-11 • 9 But as it is written: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him." • 10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. • 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

  14. 1 Corinthians 12:11 1 Cor. 12 is the great chapter on spiritual gifts. After providing a list of such gifts, Paul says: But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

  15. The Holy Spirit of God • A Will of His own… • Understanding & Knowledge of His own… • A Mind of His own… The TRAITS of a Living, Thinking, Rational BEING!!

  16. The Holy SpiritPart 1 - Being & Behavior Emotions of The Holy Spirit

  17. The Holy Spirit has the emotions of a rational being: • He feels love and affection (Romans 15:30) • He can feel sorrow and grief (Isaiah 63:10, Ephesians 4:30) • He can cry out (Galatians 4:6)

  18. Romans 15:30-31 • Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, • that I may be delivered from those in Judea who do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints…

  19. Ephesians 4:29-30 • Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. • And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

  20. Isaiah 63:10 Isaiah, speaking of the sins of Israel, says: But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit; So He turned Himself against them as an enemy, And He fought against them.

  21. Galatians 4:6-7 • And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" • Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

  22. Rational Emotions: Love and affection for us… Sorrow and grief over us… Cries out for us… A Living, Feeling, Rational BEING!!

  23. The Holy SpiritPart 1 - Being & Behavior Behavior of The Holy Spirit

  24. The Holy Spirit behaves like a sentient being • He can speak - (1 Timothy 4:1; Matthew 10:20; Acts 2:4, 8:29, 10:19; Hebrews 10:15-16) • He can teach – (John 14:26) • He testifies (bears witness) - (John 15:26) • He guides, hears, and declares – (John 16:12-13) • He lead the apostles in the early church – (Acts 8:29, 16:6-7)

  25. The Holy Spirit Speaks Acts 8 • 26 - Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, "Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is desert. • 27 So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, • 28 was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. • 29Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go near and overtake this chariot."

  26. The Holy Spirit Speaks Acts 10 After Peter’s vision on the rooftop & before the conversion of Cornelius - • 19 While Peter thought about the vision, the Spirit said to him, "Behold, three men are seeking you. • 20 Arise therefore, go down and go with them, doubting nothing; for I have sent them."

  27. John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

  28. John 15:26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.”

  29. John 16:12-14 12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

  30. Acts 16:6-7 Paul’s 2nd Missionary Journey - • 6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. • 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. Clear, directive intervention!

  31. The Holy Spirit’s Actions • Speaks • Teaches & Testifies • Guides, Hears, Declares • Guides & Leads: directs the way of disciples Conclusive evidence of the mind & will of the Holy Spirit – a rational Being!

  32. Other Behaviors: • He intercedes with God for God’s children (Romans 8:26-27) • He can strive with mankind – (Genesis 6:3) • He searches all things – (1 Corinthians 2:10) • He has fellowship with Christians – (Philippians 2:1-2, 2 Corinthians 13:14) • He comforts the servants of the Lord – (Acts 9:31, cf. 1Thessalonians 4:18)

  33. The Holy SpiritPart 1 - Being & Behavior Sins against The Holy Spirit

  34. The Holy Spirit can beSinned Against: • Man can blaspheme the Holy Spirit (Matthew 12:31-32, Mark 3:28-30)Note: blasphemy is a sin committed against Deity only. • Man can lie to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3) • Man can resist the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51) • Man can insult (despise) the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 10:29)

  35. Men’s Lies - Acts 5:3-4 Ananias & Sapphira - • 3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? • 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."

  36. Men’s Resistance – Acts 7:51b - 53 Stephen’s Defense - • 51…”You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. • 52 Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, • 53 who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it."

  37. Men’s Disdain - Hebrews 10:28-30 • 28 Anyone who has rejected Moses' law dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. • 29 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? • 30 For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The LORD will judge His people."

  38. Sins Against the Spirit • Blasphemy • Lying to the Spirit • Resisting the power of the Spirit • Insulting or Disrespecting the Spirit When we sin, we sin against God!

  39. The Holy SpiritPart 1 - Being & Behavior Powers of The Holy Spirit

  40. The Holy Spirit has and shares the Power of Deity (God) • The Holy Spirit was present and active in creation (Genesis 1:1-3, Job 26:13, 33:4) • He is all-knowing (omniscient) (1 Corinthians 2:11) • He exists everywhere (omnipresent) (Psalm 139:7-10) • He is all-powerful (omnipotent) (Job 26:13, 33:4; Genesis 1:2)

  41. Creation – Genesis 1:1-3 • 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. • 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. • 3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.

  42. All knowing – 1 Corinthians 2:11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. If God knows all things, and if the Holy Spirit knows what God does, then the Holy Spirit knows all things.

  43. Exists Everywhere – Psalm 139 • 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? • 8 If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. • 9 If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, • 10Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me.

  44. All-Powerful Job 26:13 …By His Spirit He adorned the heavens… And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters… Gen. 1:2

  45. Other Powers the Holy Spirit Shares with God • He regenerates through baptism- (John 3:5) • He was active in the resurrection of Jesus – (Romans 8:11) • He was active in miracles (Matthew 12:28, 1 Corinthians 12:4-11) • Jesus was begotten by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20) …but He is called the Son of God (Luke 1:35)

  46. Conclusion: the Holy Spirit… • Has the traits, emotions, and behavior of a living, reasoning Being • Can be sinned against by mankind • Possesses the powers of God The Holy Spirit is a living spiritual Being who is part of Deity – the Godhead!
