  6. Questions: • How does this group get the message out to the student community the role that athletics plays for a University? Not just going to the games and having great experiences or winning. Exposure • What is the “feel” around the athletic program on campus right now? Is there any talk amongst the student body? If there isn’t how do we increase the interest in athletics for the student body? • If the majority of the student population is not interested we can at least explain the role athletics plays on a college campus. • How can athletics be better for the student body? What types of things can we do for students to have them feel more included?

  7. SBU is still not at the level of our counterparts in SUNY in regards to Student Fees. • Discussions about increasing fee this year to catch up to past years 1617 (0% increase) and 1718 (2% vs. standard 3% increase). • Increase proposed would still have us lower than Binghamton and Albany. • Average annual fee in AE and CAA is $844.50 • We are currently 34% lower than CAA and AE • AE average $775. 28.13% lower than AE schools • CAA average $894.60. 37.74% lower than CAA Schools

  8. Summary $844.50 2018-19 Average Annual Athletic Fee for 12 University’s that are confirmed Ath Fees Only $557 2017-18 SBU Annual Athletic Fee 34% Lower than combined Competition in CAA & AE $775 is the average among 5 confirmed AE School (Bing, UA, UNH, UMBC, and Umass Lowell) 28.13% Lower than AE Schools who confirmed Ath Fee Only $694.50 Average Estimate of all AE school (VT, Maine, Hart .25 of total fee) 19.80% lower than average estimate of all AE schools $894.60 Average CAA FB School Student Fee 37.74% lower than average of all CAA FB Competition All while providing equal or better quality product than other schools

  9. Reasons for increase to student fee: • Indoor Facility Building Manager • Indoor Facility Maintenance and upkeep costs • Sport operating budgets have not been increased in 5 years • Support area budgets have been cut in the past few years, need to be restored in order to continue to thrive as a successful DI Athletic department. • Largest number of student athletes we have ever had. 500 and student athlete population is growing we need resources to support those student athletes to grow not decline which is what is happening due to university budget constraints. • Necessary to continue the upward trajectory of SBU Athletics • This will allow us to be more on par with our competitors’ athletic fees. • Even with this increase we are still much lower than the average America East and Colonial Athletic Association Football school averages • The value students are receiving from the exposure is a direct result of Athletics’ success. Enhancing the Stony Brook University brand and general awareness of the school’s overall excellence are some of the main benefits students receive from having a division I athletic program. • In 1718 we did not increase the fee at all. The average increase per year is 3%. In 1819 we had a 2% increase. We need to make up for the 3% we missed in 1718, the 1% in 1819, and the annual 3% in 1920. This is how we calculated the 7% increase.
