  1. Periodic Trends

  2. Atomic Radius Atomic Radius (size) is the distance between the nucleus and the outer electrons in an atom.

  3. Atomic Radius Decreases left to right, Increases top to bottom Small Large

  4. Atomic Radius - Ordering 1) Put the following elements in order of increasing atomic radius: Ca, Ge, Ni, Br Ca < Ge < Ni < Br Br < Ge < Ni < Ca Ca < Ni < Ge < Br

  5. Atomic Radius - Ordering 2) Put the following elements in order of decreasing atomic radius: Si, Pb, C, Ge Si > Pb > C > Ge C > Si > Ge > Pb Pb > Ge > Si > C

  6. Electronegativity Electronegativity is the ability of an atom to attract electrons for bonding.

  7. Electronegativity Increasing left to right, Increasing bottom to top, noble gasses excluded High Low

  8. Electronegativity- Ordering 3) Put the following elements in order of increasing electronegativity: Br, Cl, F, At At < Br < Cl < F F < Cl < Br < At Br < Cl < F < At

  9. Electronegativity- Ordering 4) Put the following elements in order of decreasing electronegativity: Zr, Sn, I, Rb Rb > Zr > Sn > I Zr > Sn > I > Rb I > Sn > Zr > Rb

  10. Ionization Energy The energy needed to remove an electron from an atom’s valence shell is ionization energy.

  11. Ionization Energy Increasing left to right, Increasing bottom to top High Low

  12. Ionization Energy - Ordering 5) Put the following elements in order of increasing ionization energy : Ni, C, Zr, Ba Ni < C < Zr < Ba Ba < Zr < Ni < C C < Ni < Zr < Ba

  13. Ionization Energy - Ordering 6) Put the following elements in order of decreasing ionization energy: Cr, Ca, Ne, P Ne > P > Cr > Ca Ca > Cr > P > Ne P > Ne > Ca > Cr
