  1. PPS Mechanics Curtis Weaverdyck UM/TAU/IS/ORNL meeting with GE Sept 27, 2012 University of Michigan C. Weaverdyck University of Michigan

  2. Outline • Explore a lot of mechanical and material challenges. • Gas mixtures • Vacuum • Fill techniques • Processing for purity • Design of a gas mixing and processing system • Ability to achieve hermetic seals in a refillable system • Demonstrated by several months of service life with a valve closure • Fixturing required for a variety of panel types, including frames for oven processing and test beam work • Materials properties necessary to handle the process techniques and requirements. C Weaverdyck University of Michigan

  3. Gas Fill System • Exploring parameter space of gas mixtures requires reliable mix, evacuate, bakeout, and fill capabilities. • We havea 4 channel mixing panel with mass flow controllers that can handle flows over 4 orders of magnitude. • Mixed gasses are stored in lecture bottles for later filling of individual detector panels. • Panels are baked under vacuum and then back filled to desired pressure. • Oven can accommodate a variety of detector panel configurations. C. Weaverdyck University of Michigan

  4. Infrastructure • Columnar Discharge Panels • Frames for safe handling during bakeout and to accommodate Source and Hodoscope placement • Hermeticity of epoxy and VCR fittings required development of reliable techniques and materials • Micro-cavity panels • Design and preliminary fabrication demonstrated • Requires precision alignment of electrode patterns C. Weaverdyck University of Michigan
