  3. What is Social Media? • Social Media offers a new place to communicate in an old fashioned way. • Essentially, social media is about talking to one another online and sharing information

  5. The power of social media • Social media is now the number one activity on the internet It is becoming ever more important, particularly for small businesses

  6. What tools would work best for you? Examples of well known Social Media tools include: • Connect with friends, colleagues or strangers • Create, contribute and publish content online • Comment on and respond to that content • Communicate freely using an array or formats

Facebook What is Facebook? • Facebook is the biggest social networking tool in the world with over 900 million users = 1 in every 11 people on earth. • Life management tool • Half of all active users log in every single day • 400 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices • Information when you want it where you want it • The UK has 35,308,600 Facebook users which represents 80% of the online population (people with internet access).

  8. Facebook Why Use It: • Best tool for promoting events • Facebook gives us a voice and a face. It lets people get to know the person behind the business/ group/ festival • For the new generation, if you’re not on Facebook, you don’t exist • Powerful analytic tools • Free!!

  10. Facebook Tips • Post regularly- 3 times per week minimum- Twice daily is ideal- 80/20 rule • Add value to your community- No-one cares what you had for dinner • Types of content you post is very important- Pictures - Video (preferably embedded)- Link

Facebook Tips • Include a full URL whenever possible • Use open ended questions – invite feedback “We’re looking for a good caterer for the festival, can anyone recommend one?” • Always respond to comments left by fans • Don’t be afraid to let your personality come through – people want to know that there is a real person behind the computer screen • Facebook tabs can be very effective (& free)

Twitter What is Twitter? • Twitter is the 2nd most popular social media tool in the world and a celebrity favourite. • 600 million users worldwide • Twitter is growing at a rate of 11 accounts per second • On a busy day, twitter sees about 175 million tweets • 75% of companies now use Twitter as a marketing channel • 2 out of 3 social media users say Twitter influences purchases

Twitter Tips • Follow relevant individuals and organisations- Twitter can be a great source of information • Minimum of two tweets per day- (including RTs) • Ideally you should be putting out 5-10 tweets • Make lists! • Learn to be concise but don’t lose your sense of fun- Always remember engagement and community is the key objective • Use link shorteners- www.bitly.com- www.tiny.url
