Pearson Success Net • Reading Streets / Math / Social Studies: All students will be given a user name and password that will be located on the first page of their homework planner/composition notebook. In the near future, students will have assignments from the website listed below. • www.pearsonsuccessnet.com

  23. Reading Counts & Chapter Books • At this time, students will only be allowed to check out reading counts & chapter books from the library • Books checked out will always be monitored by me • We will read a lot this school year

Quarterly Book Report or Project • Students will have at least two projects for every quarter • Parental assistance is strongly encouraged • A rubric will be discussed and used for grading all reports and projects • A start date and end date will be given for each assignment • Late turn-in will be accepted but 80% will be the highest grade received by the student • More information will be provided later

Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) • Software that tests student’s lexile (reading) level • Students who score below 600 are considered to need strategic interventions • Students who score between 600 and 899 are considered to be reading “at current grade level” • Students who score 900 and above are “advanced readers” • Students will take this test in five different time frames • 1st—beginning of school year • 2nd—before the end of 1st quarter • 3rd—before the end of 2nd quarter • 4th—before the end of 3rd quarter • 5th—before the end of 4th quarter

Differentiated Instruction • Not all students are alike. • Gives students multiple options for taking in information and making sense of ideas. • Teaching theory based on the premise that instructional approaches should vary. • adapted in relation to individual and diverse students in classrooms (Tomlinson, 2001). • A flexible approach to teaching.

Reciprocal Teaching • It encourages students to think about their own thought process during reading. • It helps students learn to be actively involved and monitor their comprehension as they read. • It teaches students to ask questions during reading and helps make the text more comprehensible.

  32. Computer Lab • Our visit to the computer lab are scheduled for Tuesday (8:55-9:50) and Wednesday (1:25-2:15) • Major focus is reading counts quizzes, brainpop activities, Reading Test, Math Test, and book reports or projects • If time permits, other DODEA approved software will be introduced

Student Folders • All in-class graded assignments and homework will be placed in their student folder • Student folders will be sent home at the end of each quarter with report cards • Students may bring some graded assignments home at any time • Parents may request for graded assignments to be sent home daily

Formative/Summative Assessment (Student Portfolio) • Track and record each students’ test results in a three-ring binder • Data will be used to identify strengths and weakness of specific academic skills • Data will be used to differentiate instruction • Students will update and maintain binders at all times • Parents may assist child at home will specific skills

Terra Nova • Terra Nova Testing is scheduled for sometime in March-April 2014 timeframe (Scored the highest class overall average at 78 percentile in 4th grade at AES) • Reading (last year class scored in 63 percentile) • Language Arts (last year class scored in 66 percentile) • Math (last year class scored in the 89 percentile nationwide) • Social Studies (last year class scored in 68 percentile) • Science (last year class scored in 70 percentile)
