  2. Schedule Thursday, March 15, 2012 Morning Session: 8:15-11:15 * make sure you sign in Lunch: 11:15-12:25 (catered by Bandanas) Afternoon Session: 12:30-3:30

  3. Does everyone remember how to access the standards, crosswalks, and unpacking for Health and Physical Education online? on You can use the handout : Materials and Tools for Implementing the Essential Standards in Healthful Living. (gave you in August) ncdpi.acre – will get you there for Healthful Living and Physical Education

  4. Thursday March 15th Morning Session • REVIEW: • Look at the Essential Standards Unpacking document and explain the coding used to identify the strands, standards and objectives. • In health education, there are one to five paragraphs of content covering what students will know or understand, followed by one to six “sub-objectives” to identify what the student will be able to do. • In physical education, there are bulleted sub-objectives and sub-topics. In some sections, teachers are guided as how the Clarifying Objective could be met in the class.

  5. What Makes a Standard Essential? Endurance – Knowledge that must last through college and life. Leverage- Wide application- and can move to other areas. Expand to other subjects and content. Readiness- Written clear and taught clear.

  6. Healthful Living and Physical Education Take a look through the unpacking for: K-2,3-5, and 6-8. We will divide into small groups read through these levels and then share as a large group on chart. So we have a idea what is being taught in K-8, summarize the key points.

  7. Review: Bloom’s Taxonomy

  8. Revised Blooms Taxonomy • Create • Evaluation • Evaluate • Synthesis • Analyze • Analysis • Apply • Application • Understand • Comprehension • Knowledge • Remember

  9. ACTIVITY Participants: will work in pairs and use the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy Puzzle to match the six cognitive levels with commonly used verbs and specific objectives. Next you will be given an answer sheet - please check and discuss this with your partner.

  10. Matching Now we will break into groups – Health and Physical Education Take each set of standards and begin plotting them on the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy chart. This is to get an idea of what levels are expected of students in each course. We will then discuss them as a large group. To which levels are most of the standards written? Does this mean that anything in your instruction and assessment needs to change or are your lessons already taking students to these levels? Give to Cathy

  11. NOTE: Look carefully at the Physical Education standards. According to DPI, each standard must be taught in our graduation credit course (PE I) . However, ALL the standards must also be taught in the other coursesas well. ** Each elective course can have standards that are focus standards and standards that are not the primary focus (auxiliary) but are still taught. However, each elective course needs to be different from graduation credit course. For example, Standard PE.9.MC.2.2 might be a focus standard for a Team Sports class, but would not be a focus standard in Weight Training. However, it would still be taught in the Weight Training Class.

  12. Activity • In pairs– discuss which standards will be the focus for each elective course, and fill out the chart: PE Elective Course Standards Alignment. • ** Fill out the attached charts for each elective course. give to Cathy.
