  1. Instilling God’s Love for All PeopleCare Group August 2015

  2. Many sources of information on parenting… Good and poor info, wise and foolish and everything in between.

  3. Where can we go to learn?1. the Bible 2. our relationship with God 3. friends and family

  4. Instilling • God’s Love • All People

  5. What does it mean to instill? • words and actions – model priorities, characteristics, ethics, beliefs • intentionally and unintentionally • consistent, chosen routines and sometimes events that build foundations • there are limits

  6. Names help us understand Who and what Jehovah-shalom (peace) “I am your peace. I have made peace with you, and I give you my peace.” Jehovah-shammah (is there) “I am with you. I am your ever-present, all-environing God and Savior. I will never leave you nor forsake you. Wherever you go, there I am, and my hand will hold you, and my right hand will lead you.”

  7. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, Isaiah 61 and Luke 4

  8. Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogantor rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Corinthians 13

  9. All people: family, friends, neighbors, their peers, medical personnel, others they’re surrounded by but don’t know, people who look like them, people who don’t, authorities, people on the news, famous people, sports figures, strangers, people from 196 countries and who represent 16,137 people groups…

  10. Starts with you. …can't share what (or Who) you don’t know. No one is born already in a relationship with God, although according to Jesus, children seem especially open to knowing Him.

  11. …but their spiritual well-being is the most important.

  12. Continue to know Him more and more Grow in your relationship with Him over the decades. As we experience God and how He parents, we learn how to love.

  13. ‘Helpful Hints’ for teaching children to care about others • Children need to know they are not the center of the universe (or your universe). Deut 6:4-9 • It’s good to learn about child development. Helps you understand and be realistic.

  14. Books Exposure to people like and unlike us. Classics. Little Hs on Prairie – like or unlike? farmers, family, food, responsibilities, parents went to visit relatives for a ‘get away’ for a week. Deeper issues arise and child begins to see similarities and differences. Opportunities to bond, learn, discuss, enjoy, bond. See pics of people, imagine sights and sounds of places.

  15. Traveling Jr Hi to TN. Had huge impact – met fam, learned to install toilet, met kid and shared faith. Conflict and more opps to learn. Cambodia – visit friends, learn abt country. Remember seeing kids working, ‘toys’, houses. Sense of outrage when got back to US – inequity, over the top ‘stuff’, hyper about germs. Sights, sounds, tastes.

  16. Home • chapter entitled ‘Door that Opens and Closes’ from Edith Schaeffer’s What is a Family. • Welcome people into your home: family, friends, guests, strangers, planned and unplanned. Play, eat, converse, ask questions, work together to host. • Nepali girls learn to make tea and serve it to those visiting. • Our daughter-in-law’s family has annual Xmas Eve gathering of old friends • Bring/invite Internationals to your Thanksgiving or Christmas meal with family • Invite someone to live with your family

  17. Events, holidays • Easter egg hunt for neighborhood kids, trick-or-treating… invite people new to this culture to join you • go to others’ cultural celebrations – weddings, baby naming, Dewali. • take pics to remember and share • you may be ignorant of their cultural practices – ask • projects/causes/opps to help others – Angel Tree

  18. Limits of instilling: • ultimately each person chooses for himself • we cannot put God’s love into a person • free will – an amazing, profound, difficult, yet necessary quality • the ability to love does not come naturally; it’s a spiritual ability empowered by God.

  19. Joys of instilling: • We get to know God! • We experience God’s power and love in our lives! • Our lives become characterized by love! • We influence our children’s present and eternal lives! • We influence others’ present and eternal lives to!. • Our lives become more about God!

  20. We are pictures of what it’s like to have relationships - with God and others. We hope and pray our children will love the Lord and as a result, love others. • May our influence in others’ lives be one of love!

  21. Some books • The Bible in a translation you can understand. I like New American Standard Bible (NASB) and New Living Translation (NLT). Read and study with your spouse/a friend. Start with the New Testament book of John or Mark. • Give Them Grace by (mother and daughter team) Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson • What is a Family by Edith Schaeffer
