Sister Cities International (SCI) is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network that creates and strengthens partnerships between communities in the United States and those in other countries, particularly through the establishment of “Sister Cities.” • It is part of the initiative begun by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 with an effort to develop citizen diplomacy to promote world peace. • SCI is the largest global network connecting tens of thousands of citizen diplomats and volunteers in nearly 500 member communities with over 2,000 partnerships in more than 140 countries around the world to foster peace and prosperity.   5. Sister Cities of Houston is a non-profit organization created to strengthen Houston's greater programs through a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities in two countries. This relationship is officially recognized after the highest elected or appointed official from both communities sign off on an agreement to become Sister Cities. • Our mission is to promote peace through international partnerships, foster mutual respect, understanding and cooperation between the citizens of Houston and its affiliated Sister Cities overseas.   7. Our goals are to increase global cooperation at the community level, develop intercultural appreciation, promote international trade and commerce, economic development and tourism. The Mayor's Office of Trade and International Affairs manages the City of Houston’s Sister City programs and the official city-to-city relationships on behalf of the Mayor.   9. The Sister Cities International (SCI) Annual Conference will be held in Houston on July 17-19. Our focus theme is “Cities Mean Business.” • More than 700 citizen diplomats from the U.S. and abroad are expected to participate representing local governments, the U.S. Department of State, foreign delegations, businesses, NGO’s and cultural and civic organizations. We are pleased to have an active and diverse Host Committee that is providing deep program development including: • Greater Houston Partnership and Houston First, the city’s tourism and convention support organization • CEOs of three premier Texas Medical Center institutions • Representatives from the Port of Houston • NASA • Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo •  Aga Khan Council for Southwest United States • Houston Arts Alliance • Houston Museum of Natural Science • Additionally, the following educational institutions are providing support and content: • Rice University  • Texas Southern University • Houston Community College System  Sister Cities International (SCI)

By joining hands with SCH to help bring together a successful SCI Annual Conference “Cities Mean Business” • We encourage you as Consular Corps partner members with existing Sister Cities relationships, and the countries with interest in establishing a new Sister Cities relationships, to Register and participate in this important international Conference. • Additionally, we encourage you to: • Promote and facilitate the participation of youth in the Youth Leadership Summit and Youth and Talent Show • Motivate your Ambassador, business delegations, and the Mayor of your Sister Cities to Register and participate in the Conference Join hands with SCH to help bringing together a successful Conference
