  4. Introduction… Patients entrust the NHS or allow it to gather sensitive information relating to their health and other matters as part of their seeking treatment.  They do so in confidence and they have the legitimate expectation that staff will respect this trust.  It is essential, if the legal requirements are to be met and the trust of patients is to be retained, that the NHS provides, and is seen to provide, a confidential service. Induction Training

  5. Introduction… The December 1997 Caldicott Report identified weaknesses in the way parts of the NHS handled confidential patient data. The report made several recommendations, one of which was the appointment of Caldicott Guardians, members of staff with a responsibility to ensure patient data is kept secure. Caldicott Guardians are senior staff in the NHS and social services appointed to protect patient information. Induction Training

  6. The Caldicott Principles… The Caldicott Committee made a number or recommendations aimed at improving the way the NHS handles and protects patient information: Show Me Justify the purpose. Use patient identity only where absolutely necessary. Use the minimum patient-identifiable information. Access to patient-identifiable information should be on a strict need-to-know basis. Everyone should be aware of his or her responsibilities. Every use must be lawful. Induction Training

  7. The Trust’s responsibility… NHS Trusts must make patients aware of the information they keep on them. Additionally, confidentiality and security systems as well as the information flows containing patient identifiable information must be reviewed on a regular basis. Further points are: Show Me Improve the performance in staff induction, training and compliance with guidance. Prepare protocols for sharing patient information flowing to and from the Trust. Prepare annual improvement plans and outcome reports. Induction Training

  8. Your responsibilities… As a Prestige Nursing member working in the NHS, you must be aware of your responsibility for safeguarding confidentiality and preserving information security. NHS organisations may address this by developing staff codes of conduct, which are tailored to the needs of different staff groups. Ensure that you know whether such a code of conduct exists where you are placed and always adhere to it. You must familiarise yourself with the Caldicott principles, as covered in this session, and adhere to them as well. Induction Training

  9. Review… This eLearning session has covered the Caldicott principles of confidentiality and security of patient-identifiable data, which are: Justify the purpose. Use patient identity only where absolutely necessary. Use the minimum patient-identifiable information. Access to patient-identifiable information should be on a strict need-to-know basis.
