  1. Autonomous Ice-Based Observatories John Toole, Rick Krishfield, Andrey Proshutinsky, and Marie-Louise Timmermans Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution http://www.whoi.edu/itp Goal: Document/understand interannual change through sustained observations of the polar ice pack, the overlying atmosphere, and the upper ocean water properties

  2. Ice-Tethered Profiler http://www.whoi.edu/itp Real-time data telemetry: inductive modem profiler -> surface Iridium from surface -> lab Sensors: temperature, salinity and O2 now, plans to add fluorometer, OBS, PAR Development jump-started by WHOI technology award. Currently supported by NSF.

  3. Data:http://www.whoi.edu/itp There are three levels of data: LEVEL 1 RAW DATA is received from each ITP several times per day (after each profile) and made available within a few hours at ITP data.  LEVEL 2 REAL TIME DATA with preliminary processing is updated multiple times per day.  The location data are filtered and interpolated, while the scientific and operating data are averaged in 2 m bins and plotted. LEVEL 3 ARCHIVE DATA includes all de-spiking, filtering, and corrections and will be updated several times per year at ITP data.

  4. ITPs in the field now Data available in real time from www.whoi.edu/itp

  5. Goal: maintain a drifting array of IBOs within an Arctic Observing Network

  6. Some planned Ships and IABP activities in the Arctic Ocean for 2007 x x x x x x x x x x x x x

  7. Summary • There are 4 ITPs working in the Beaufort Gyre now; • In 2007 we plan to deploy 13 ITPs: NSF – 4; DAMOCLES project – 4; Alfred Wegener Institute, Germany – 2; Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute, Russia – 1; WHOI – 2; • In 2008 we plan to deploy 4 ITPs to replace old and destroyed ones; • We have a pending proposal (NSF) for fabricating and deploying 5 more ITPs in 2008 and 5 ITPs in 2009.
