History • Before the Tang Dynasty was the Sui Dynasty. • The ruler of the Sui Dynasty was Yang Guang and he was very cruel to the people. • This caused a lot of uprisings and weakened the empire. • Kao Tsu (A.K.A Li Yuan) used his own army to rise against them and soon took over the empire. • This was the beginning to the Tang Dynasty.

  3. Tang KaoTsu • Born in 566 and died in 635. • Ruled from 618-626. • Li Yuan was the first emperor of the Tang Dynasty. • His family was intermarried with nomadic tribes of North China.

  4. Golden Age (627-649) • Tang dynasty is the most powerful country in that time. • Started to recover from it’s weak condition. • It was ruled by Emperor Taizong. • During this time social order was stable, the economy was doing well, and the national boundaries were open to foreign countries.

  5. Religion • In the beginning the policy was for tolerance of religions. During this time there were two main religions, Buddhism and Daoism. • As the Tang Dynasty become more powerful, they allowed the national boundaries to be open to foreign countries. This allowed other religions such as Christianity and Islam to spread throughout the empire.

  6. Economy • Productivity had been damaged during the Sui Dynasty. After the Tang Dynasty was established Kao Tsu paid much attention to the development of agriculture. • Therefore, the economy was mostly based on agriculture and trading to foreign countries used the silk road.

  7. Society • The Tang Dynasty had a set of laws that were very specific about what was allowed in society, what was a crime, and what individual punishments were for violating the legal code. • Treated people fairly and stressed importance on education. • Thought that an educated society was no treat to the government but rather a stable foundation for a peaceful society.

  8. Decline • officials had too much power. • Natural disasters occurred. • Uprisings slowly developed. • Huang Chao Rebellion (874-884)- The leader was Huang Chao, who was a military genius and won many victories due to superior and well-armed soldiers. • Rebellion lasted a decade.

  9. Timeline of Tang Dynasty • Fall of Sui Dynasty. Tang dynasty is established: Kao Tsu. (618-626) • Tang Taizong takes over (second son of previous ruler. (629-649) • Golden age. Tang Dynasty becomes very powerful and opens national boundaries to foreigners. • Tang Gaozong(ninth son of previous emperor) considered weak because he was assisted by Empress Wu Zetian for most of his reign. (650-683 ) • Tang Zhongzong Ruled for two months before he was deposed by his father Wu Zetian. Wu is deposed in 705. Zhongzong rules 5 more years. (684-690) (705-710) • Wu Zetian took over forcefully after son. 690-705) son took over again. • Tang Ruizongtook over (710-712) • Tang Xuanzong rules (712-756) had the longest rein in Tang Dynasty.

Timeline Continued… • Tang Suzong ruled (756-762) during this time eunuchs gained power (castrated men) and were considered higher class. • Tang Daizong ruled (762-779) believed in Buddhism and spent a lot of money building Buddhist temples. • Tang Dezong ruled (780-805) was very industrious. Tried to control outside power but failed. • Tang Shunzong ruled (805-806) tried to improve the administration of the Tang court by reformation. • Tang Xianzong ruled (806-820)  the eunuchs' power became more rampant. Xianzong was murdered by a eunuch. (castrated men) • Tang Muzong ruled (821-824) irresponsible emperor. Neglected duties and allowed military officials to gain power. • Tang Jingzong ruled (824-826) a teenager emperor who ruled with the real power held by eunuchs and corrupt officials. • Tang Wenzong ruled (826-840) central power was under the control of military eunuchs for some time. • Tang Wuzong ruled (840-846)  known for the religious persecution of Buddhism.

  11. Timeline Continued… • Tang Xuanzong (846-859)  was a lazy and unskillful emperor. Starting from his reign, the Tang Dynasty was in decline. • Tang Yizong (859-873)   He encouraged the development of culture and technology. • Tang Xizong (873-888) Tried to gain control but chaos kept occurring. • Tang Zhaozong (888-904) In his reign, the Huang Chao Rebellion broke out which weakened them. • Tang Aidi (904-907)  last emperor in the Tang Dynasty; He was poisoned by Zhu Wen (a chancellor in late Tang) • DECLINE. EMPIRE FALLS.
