Integrating protection, gender, age and disabilities in FSLC assessments • The training cum workshop was held on 3-4 March, 2014 • It was attended by over 25 participants from 16 FSLC partners • The output of the exercise was to get an overview of how protection, age, gender and disabilities matter in food security and livelihoods; and then provide suggestions to assessment team for consideration

Common Emerging Themes 8 common themes were identified as relevant for integration of protection, age, gender and disabilities FSLC assessments • Demography • Community dynamics • Conflict analysis • Vulnerability analysis • Coping mechanism • Do No Harm • Do Some Good • Team composition and engagement

  4. FSLC assessments • FSLC has three modalities • Minimum humanitarian access – Initial Rapid Needs Assessment • Some humanitarian access – Emergency Food Security Assessment • With humanitarian access – Food Security Monitoring System

Recommendations for IRNA • IRNA is a standard 17 page tool • Partners have only a few hours on ground to conduct IRNA • Partners need to ensure that the information is accurate and numbers are not inflated; and that recommendations are realistic • To integrate protection, gender, age and disabilities a few minimum steps can be taken by FSLC

Conclusion • A few specific suggestions have been made in the questionnaires • Cross references/tabulations at analysis level on different themes should be done • Participation of key focal points in analysis of data for proper cross tabulation • Sharing of contacts of protection referral agencies and disability groups in case assessment groups find systemic problems

  9. Way forward • Suggestions to be discussed with the assessment coordinator • At present it’s a ‘wish list’ and so after the discussion with the most important elements will be agreed with the assessment team for integration • All FSLC partners are encouraged to integrates the recommendations into their organizational assessments.
