  3. India as a colony • Colony of Great Britain • Treated unfairly- best jobs and schools for British • Had to send raw materials to Great Britain and buy finished products from Britain

  4. India starts to band together • Indian national Congress (Hindus) • Muslim League (Muslims) • Want independence, fight on British side during WWI • If protest, thrown in jail

  5. Turning point: Amritsar Massacre • In 1919, fired into a group of protesters • 400 killed, 1200 wounded • Indians come together and want independence after this event

  6. Mohandas Gandhi • Civil disobedience • Led non-violent protests • Boycott British goods, refuse to attend 2nd class schools. Refuse to pay unfair salt taxes • Led a “Salt March” where they made their own salt by evaporating sea water

  7. British guards beat peaceful demonstrators • People around the world called for India’s independence • Demonstrations hurt British economy and the world pressure wore the British down

  8. The Turning Point for Indp • 1935 Govt of India act: some self govt • WWII: Indians not getting involved • Independence granted after WWII

  9. Hindus and Muslims • Arguing btwn 2 religions over govt • 3 countries: India (Hindu), West Pakistan and East Pakistan (Muslim)
