  1. North Etobicoke LIP Summit Woodbine Convention Centre June 28th, 2011

  2. Background • LIPs stems from the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement Strategic Plan, Strategy 3: • CIC and MCI (Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration) will work with municipalities and federal-provincial government departments to enable partnerships that will integrate newcomers into the economic and social life of Ontario communities. • CIC and MCI developed the LIP initiative, which was further refined, in consultation with the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and the City of Toronto.

  3. Why LIPs? • Ontario municipalities and regions want to encourage newcomers to settle and stay in their communities. • Communities that are organized, welcoming, and committed to helping newcomers succeed have the best potential to attract and retain new immigrants. • Local knowledge of the service delivery landscape is essential to building logical, clear, and coordinated settlement service pathways for newcomers. • Ontario municipalities want to provide a community lens on integration of funding decisions.

  4. Objectives The objective of LIPs is to strengthen the role of regions and local communities in the integration of newcomers by: • Supporting better coordination of integration services, including settlement and language training in local communities. • Providing a framework to facilitate the development and implementation of sustainable local and regional solutions. • Supporting the development and implementation of strategies and plans that provide community-specific solutions for achieving better outcomes for newcomers.

  5. LIPs Update • Approximately 34 of the 45 LIPs are in the implementation stage • CIC continues to support the LIPs’ ability to meet and coordinate their action plans • LIPs are being rolled out nationally in those provinces that currently are not devolved
