  11. What do I like to do in my free time?

  12. Classroom Expectations • Be all that you can be • Inside the classroom: • Be on time • Come prepared: bring notebook, textbook • Focus • Listen to others when they are talking • Take notes • Speak English only • No distractions-no cell phones, no talking to your classmates • Make mistakes-it’s the only way you will learn. If you are not making mistakes, it means you are not trying new things

  13. Outside the classroom: • Make an appointment for office hours • Get to know the foreign teachers • Practice your English with your classmates • Review your notes • Watch English movies without Chinese subtitles • Do your own work-don’t copy from other students

  14. Learning is a process and can be fun • This is different from other classes because it’s more than just gaining knowledge • It’s learning how to communicate • Doing activities and practicing with your classmates is how you are going to get results

  15. Make this a safe place • Listen to others • Be kind and encouraging to each other by using positive words: good job, nice try • No spitting in class • Throw garbage in the trash can • Be academically honest-do your own work, no copying, no cheating

  16. Office Hours • This is your chance to meet with me outside of the classroom. • We can meet one-on-one or in small groups. • I am available on Tuesday from 3:30-4:30pm and Thursday from 11:00am-12:00pm. If those times don’t work for you, we can schedule a different time. • Sign-up in class or text me to schedule a time. • My phone #: 18539401705 • Texting is better than calling. Only call between 9am-9pm. Otherwise, text. • Email: sunnysunshine@pobox.com

  17. Goals for the class: • To learn new vocabulary including idioms • To improve your pronunciation • To improve your listening skills. • To improve your spoken English so that you can effectively communicate in English

  18. Requirements: • Attendance: Attendance is required! An unexcused absence is a 2 point deduction from your final grade An excused absence is a 1 point deduction (you must have an official excuse note) • Bring your textbook, notebook, pen to every class

  19. Grading breakdown: • Attendance: 10% • Homework: 5% • Classwork: 35% (this is made up of 4 separate activities that will be done in class and class participation) • Midterm Examination: 25% • Final Examination: 25% • Total: 100%

  20. Getting to know each other: • With your partner, find out this information: Chinese and English name Hometown Favorite thing about their hometown

  21. Homework: • Next week we will start doing impromptu stories • Be ready to share for 1-4 minutes about an event in your life • Each week, 6 students will share. You will pick out a random question before break time and have 10 minutes to prepare • Topics included will be: a childhood memory, a place you’ve visited, a special holiday you celebrated, something you did with your best friend
