  1. The ABCs of RTI: Background and the Basics

  2. Questions we will cover about RTI What is RTI anyway? Why do it? What’s so wrong with the waywe’re doing things now? What are the components of RTI? Where do we start? 2

  3. RTI stands for.. Response to Intervention 3

  4. In a nutshell, RTI is the practice of… providing high quality interventions matched to student need, monitoring progress frequently to make decisions about changes in instruction or goals and applying child response data to important educational decisions. (NASDSE, 2005)

  5. RTI Is RTI is an overall integrated system of service delivery.

  6. RTI is effective for students who are at risk for school failure as well as students in other disability categories. RTI Is

  7. The use of RTI is an excellent opportunity to more effectively align IDEA and NCLB principles and practices. RTI Is

  8. Why do it? If students are not reading at grade level by the end of third grade, the odds that they will ever read at grade level are only .... 1 in 17!

  9. Why do it? 4th Grade 2 hours of specialized instruction equals Kindergarten 1/2 hour of specialized instruction

  10. Why do it? effective classroom instruction targeted small-group instruction + ________________________________________ remediating up to 98% of early reading problems

  11. Why do it? A combination of effective classroom instruction and targeted small-group instruction can remediate up to 98% of students performing below the 30th percentile in early reading skills. Foorman, 2003

  12. We are already doing many things right! What’s so wrong with the way we’re doing things now?

  13. Problems With the Traditional System • Separation of general and special education • Little emphasis on prevention and early intervention • Undocumented benefits of special education • Offers little information to inform instruction • Lack of scientifically-based instruction and intervention • Eligibility determination variable across and within states • Minority overrepresentation

  14. Small group instruction Standardized Testing Dibels Star Reading NWEA Minds in Motion Individualized Instruction Progress Monitoring

  15. The framework is the 3-tier model Movement across tiers is fluid and data-driven. • Tier 3: • Individual Students • Few Students • Intense Interventions, • Longer Duration 5% 15% • Tier 2: • Targeted, At-Risk Students • Some students • Group Interventions, • Targeted, Efficient 80% • Tier I: • All Students • Preventative, Proactive 15

  16. The Key Components of RTI All Children can learn Data-driven Decision Making Early Intervention Progress Monitoring Differentiated Instruction Research-Based Instruction Problem-Solving Method Tiered Model CD_youth(imageState)

  17. Where do we start? RTI is a general education initiative General educators will be more involved in RTI than all specialists General educators will play an active role in student assessment General educators will play an active role in intervention planning and implementation

  18. The key is in identifying the right students, early enough, and in a way that informs how we serve them.. And how we serve struggling students is not a one-size-fits-all approach This is the essence of Response to Intervention or RTI! Where do we start?

  19. Tertiary Prevention or Tier III: Specialized Individualized Systems for Students with Intensive Needs 3-Tier Model ~5% ~15% Primary Prevention or Tier I: School-/Classroom- Wide Systems for All Students, Staff, & Settings Core Reading Program Secondary Prevention or Tier II: Specialized Group Systems for Students with At-Risk Behavior ~80% of Students
