  1. Oligarchy in Sparta8.4

  2. The Spartan State • Other Greeks both admired and feared the Spartans • Their customs were strange • Boys were trained and served the army for about 20 years • Women were responsible for raising strong children for Sparta • Gov. was a mixture of oligarchy, monarchy and democracy • Greeks feared their growing army

  3. The Spartan State • Government in Sparta • Ruled by 2 kings who were military generals (1 always went with the army) • These kings headed a council of 28 men over 60 • This council was the real power in Sparta • There was also an assembly of citizens (only 9000 cit. in Sparta) • The assembly could pass laws -the council had to approve it • The assembly elected 5 ephors • checked on the day to day running of the government • Could remove a king who broke the law

  4. The Spartan State • Military Conquest • To meet its need for resources Sparta conquered its neighbors, starting with Messenia • The Messenians then became helots • Forced to work on farms for Sparta • ½ their food went to Sparta • Treated badly • Allowed the Spartans to train as warriors

  5. The Spartan State • The Helot Revolts • In the early 400s BC the helots revolted • Sparta put it down • But they feared the helots since they outnumbered the Spartans • Had to choose to loosen control over the helots or become a military state • Chose the military state • Ruled the helots through terror

  6. A Disciplined Society • Due to their history the Spartans valued military discipline • Not the luxuries that Athenians valued • Education • Spartan boys began their training at age 7 • Not a well rounded education – learned to be soldiers • Lived in the barracks • At 18 learned to be part of the phalanx • Could marry, but spent most of their time with the other men

  7. A Disciplined Society • Social Classes • Men had to pass a test to become citizens = “equals” • If they did not they were inferiors and were outcast • At 60 they could be elected to the council of elders • Role of Women • Were expected to be fit, and participated in sports • They were to raise healthy babies • Had more independence and responsibilities than other Greek women

  8. A Disciplined Society • Sparta and Athens • Their differences -as seen on pg. 231? Led to the two to mistrust each other • This would lead to war
