  2. Pre-reading questions What do you know about Michael Jordan? What is the context of the image George describes at the beginning of his article? What signs of greatness does George see in Jordan? How do the public (especially Black people) think of Jordan?

  3. In-Class Discussion What is popular culture? George names many people, for example, Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, “Sugar” Ray Robinson, Jackie Robinson, Willie Mays, Muhammad Ali, Julius Erving. Why is only Jordan taken as an icon?

  4. Michael Jordan “you-know-what-I’m-sayin’”

  5. In-Class Discussion How does Jordan “epitomize Black masculinity”? Contrast this statement with George’s comment about the “you-know-what-I’m-sayin’” types.

  6. In-Class Discussion 4. George’s describes the moment in the Bulls locker room when Jordan “sought a moment of solitude” that cameras prevented. Is that “a dignity as heroic” to you?

  7. In-Class Discussion 5. Does George’s writing about that moment suggest a second invasion of privacy or does he have another purpose in mind? 6. Examine the image if Michael Jordan carefully. If you found this image in a heap of other images (choose a variety to give this question some weight), how would you compare it to the others? On what ground?

  8. In-Class Discussion What influence does the author think Jordan have on women and men, Blacks and Whites and children of all ages? 8. George sees lots of signs of greatness in Jordan. Could you find out those same signs in somebody you know? How would read those signs?
