  1. Keeping Your Home Secure While On Vacation

  2. While we’re all perfectly entitled to go away on vacation – and many of us certainly deserve the break – we must not neglect the security of our homes when we’re not there, otherwise those who believe they are entitled to break in and rob us, will do so without hesitation. There are several ways in which you can help to protect your home while you’re on vacation, and if you follow them, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to jet off to different climes safe in the knowledge that your home isn’t left vulnerable to intrusion.

  3. Ensure that your locks are working and are strong enough: The importance of this cannot be stressed enough. Intruders will have easy access to your home and your possessions if you’re away from the property and the locks are not secure enough. Modern criminals know many techniques for breaking locks, but with the latest upgrades and an assessment from your local qualified locksmith, you could secure your home with the strongest, safest, most tamper-proof locks on the market. So, before you leave, make an appointment to have your locks assessed and upgraded wherever necessary; it’ll be a decision you won’t regret.

  4. Make your home look as if it’s occupied: One way of helping to make your home look as if it’s occupied when it isn’t, is to set your lights on a timer, both inside and out. You could also do the same with your television and radio. Other ways of preventing your home from looking empty and being at risk of burglary, is to have your friends, family, neighbours or hired workers tend to the things that contribute to a feeling of absence, such as mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, picking up your mail/newspapers (better yet, cancel as much as you can while you’re away) and shovelling the snow or brushing the leaves.

  5. Get someone to physically check on your home at regular intervals: Ask a trusted friend, family member or neighbour to stop by and check on your home as often as they can or split the task between several trusted people. They will be quick to spot anything that looks out of place or suspicious, and can replace burned out bulbs, collect fliers, move vehicles or even adjust your blinds, shutters and drapes to help your home look occupied.

  6. Install an alarm system: If you haven’t already had an alarm system installed at your home, then you should really consider it, as they are the ultimate burglar deterrent, especially if the system is being remotely monitored so that someone can respond promptly to any issues. If you already have an alarm system in place, then please have it checked professionally before you leave to ensure that it’s in good working order. Nobody wants to be constantly worried about the security of their home while on vacation, but if you follow these simple tips and never scrimp on home protection, especially your locks and alarm systems, you shouldn’t have to.
