What Is COS Funding Opportunities? • Community of Science (COS) is an online, subscription database of announcements for grants, fellowships and awards from around the world • Provides general phrase searches or detailed advanced searches, specifying a wide range of criteria from grant amount to location to deadline • Don’t let the name fool you! • COS provides opportunities in all disciplines: physical sciences, social sciences, life sciences, health & medicine, arts & humanities.

What COS can provide • Over 25,000 records representing over $33 billion in funding. • Sponsors throughout the world for recipients throughout the world. • Access to private foundations, public agencies, national and local governments, corporations and more. • Funding for research, collaborations, travel, curriculum development, conferences, fellowships, postdoctoral positions, equipment acquisitions, capital or operating expenses. • Timely information that is verified with sponsor, edited for consistency and optimized for accurate searching.

  4. Accessing COS Method 1 – Without a Password • Access is granted from any on-campus computer without a username or password at http://fundingopps.cos.com/

  5. Accessing COS Method 2 – With a Password • Username and Password Access is necessary when: • A user is off-campus • A user needs to save a funding record or search (which you need to do to set up a Funding Alert)

  6. Setting up a Username and Password • Go to http://www.cos.com/ and • click the “New User? Register Free” icon near the top left of the screen.

  8. Setting up a Username and Password • Fill in the Required Information • Ensure you select American University from the dropdown list of institutions, so that you will be authenticated properly and be granted access to all services to which we subscribe
