From April 9-11 PediHabilidad sponsored the IV Neurology Brigade under leadership of Dr. Sebastian Espinosa. Nine neurologists and other medical professionals from the US evaluated 245 patients with neurologic conditions over the three day mission, 106 of whom were treated for epilepsy. From May 4-8 PediHabilidad sponsored the course “Bringing Orthopedics, Sensory Concerns, and Motor Learning to Pediatric Neuromotor Rehabilitation Using Orthotic Modifications & TheraTogs” with the esteemed Beverly Cusick from the US. Forty six Ecuadorian therapists from all around the country were trained in Pediatric rehabilitation. PediHabilidad also participated in the Metrofraternidad Brigade in March during which three children had orthopedic surgeries that will allow them to stand correctly and learn to walk independently. PediHabilidad also continued with its training sessions for municipal community health workers as part of the Community Based Rehabilitation Project. PediHabilidad bid farewell to volunteer interns Sienna Walker and Allie VanBeek, as they returned to the US after their six and three month stays in Ecuador, and in June welcomed US physical therapist volunteer Asiya Nieves. Stanislaw Buchs of CanThouPhysio2000 also visited PediHabilidad from Switzerland to award Lic. Alexandra Cadena as “therapist of the year” for her publication in the biannual magazine. A special thanks to the Mia Sutphin Memorial Foundation for their generous 2012 grant award; their ongoing support since the founding of PediHabilidad in 2006 has been an integral part of making PediHabilidad a reality! Pedihabilidad staff & volunteers continue to battle accessibility challenges as they visit the community to deliver an adapted chair with Stan Buchs of CanThouPhysio 2000 (above center) The IV Neurology Brigade team (above right) Hospital José María Velasco Ibarra Tena, Ecuador
