  1. WINDOWS 7 How Will It Affect YOU, Looking Through a New Window? Heidi Strande ITSS, Technical Trainer University of North Dakota

  2. OS History: • Windows XP (OS) developed in 2001 • Most of us still use this OS • Windows Vista released in 2007 • Few upgraded to Vista • Enhanced security features: greater stability (helped to avoid “hanging” and “crashing”) • Enhanced features made Vista “computing-resource hungry” which slowed down all applications • The only way to make it run well was by substantially upgrading your hardware. • Vista's failure pushed Microsoft to work quickly towards another version = Windows 7

  3. Benefits • Green Computing (The Kermit Factor): reduce power consumption; save money (7 is more energy efficient than Vista and XP) • Mobile Computing: improved battery life (laptop; 25% better); amount of activity determines new power management features to save • Laptop batteries will run longer and require less charging • Desktop machines will require less energy when being used and save you money while idle

  4. Benefits Continued… • Windows XP Mode: virtual based environment and a fully licensed copy of Windows XP SP3; available for free (via download), to users of Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions. • Microsoft’s answer to corporations who are reluctant to upgrade from Windows XP (legacy applications that only work with XP) • You can run directly from your Windows 7 Desktop seamlessly, while taking advantage of all the power consumption savings and other new features the Windows 7 OS has to offer.

  5. What’s New In Windows 7 • Aero Features = • Features that provide a rich visual experience with a glossy and transparent user interface, and dynamic visual and animation effects such as glossy window borders, live preview of taskbar icons, and a 3D view of open windows.

  6. What’s New In Windows 7Aero Features • Peek (X-ray vision: peer past all your open windows straight to the Windows 7 desktop) • Taskbar Peek (view open Windows and choose from thumbnail) • Shake (click on a pane and give your mouse a shake: every open window except the one you clicked on disappears) • Snap (a new way to resize open windows, simply by dragging them to the edges of your screen) • Jump Lists (a list of menu options related to a program or application that is displayed when you right-click a taskbar icon) • Flip (you can choose to preview the open windows in a stacked order) Ctrl + Windows Logo Key + Tab ( DEMO )

  7. Aero Features • Peek (X-ray vision: peer past all your open windows straight to the Windows 7 desktop) [Located in lower, right-hand corner of the System Tray]

  8. Aero Features • Taskbar Peek (mouse over an application button, thumbnails of open windows associated with that program pop up) [Full screen view when hovering over thumbnail view]

  9. Aero Features • Shake (click on a window pane and give your mouse a shake: every open window except the one you clicked on disappears) [Shake vigorously Back and Forth] [When you shake a second time, the windows closed will reappear]

  10. Aero Features • Snap (new way to resize open windows, simply by dragging them to the edges of your screen) Drag window to top of monitor screen = full-screen [Window Key + Arrow Key Up] Drag window to left or right of monitor screen = half-screen [Window Key + Arrow Left or Right will dock the current window]

  11. Aero Features • Jump Lists • Provide users with quick access to a mini-Start menu containing lists of pictures, music, or applications that are used more frequently. • Jump lists can be found on the application icons that appear on the Taskbar or on the Start menu. [Right-Click the Taskbar Button]

  12. Aero Features • Flip (you can choose to preview the open windows in a stacked order) Ctrl + Windows Logo Key + Tab [Temp: Windows Logo Key + Tab]

  13. Additional New Features • Search Feature (redesigned search engine to be more powerful and less resource intensive)

  14. Search Feature Continued… • Windows 7 makes searching easier by showing sections of text with the search word or phrase highlighted. Turn on the Preview pane; so you don’t have to open each document to find what you are looking for.

  15. Additional New Features • Pinning • you can right-click any application and choose to “pin” it to the Start Menu, or the Taskbar, or both. When you “pin” a program to the Start menu it will always appear in the top-left pane of the Start menu.

  16. Additional New Features • Libraries • Instead of having all files and folders organized under the familiar Documents folder, W7 features separate Libraries for specific content types such as contacts, documents, downloads, music, pictures, and videos [A library is used to organize folders into one collection no matter where they are originally stored on your computer.]

  17. Libraries Continued… • Help you view and work with data in one place, even if it is scattered • Display the information in the manner most appropriate for the content (Example: Pictures Library will display thumbnail images) • Each Library is stylized to fit its content

  18. Additional New Features • Gadgets • Gadgets are mini-programs that display current, updated information • Many gadgets are useful as system monitoring tools for resources like CPU, memory, hard drive and network usage; calendar; clock; weather; slide show; etc. [Gadget Gallery: a list of default gadgets available]

  19. Additional New Features • Personalization • Change the appearance and display properties of your desktop to reflect your style and preference • Change Desktop Icons • Change Mouse Pointers • Change Your Account Picture • Aero Themes • Basic and High Contrast Themes • Desktop Background • Window Color • Sounds • Screen Saver

  20. Improved Accessories • WordPad (ribbon-based user interface)

  21. Improved Accessories continued… • Paint (Ribbon-based user interface; new shapes; more intricate brushes; nice ruler)

  22. Improved Accessories continued… • Calculator (modes: Standard, Scientific, Programmer, and Statistics; unit conversion, date calculations, and gas mileage)

  23. New Accessories • Snipping Tool (screen capture tool) • Sticky Note You can save captures as an HTML, PNG, GIF, or JPEG file. • Jot down notes, phone numbers, reminders, or other information and display them on your desktop

  24. Noteworthy Benefits • The Small Stuff • Performance and Reliability • Increase User Productivity • Added Security with IE8 • (high-level security features protect both your data and privacy from possible threats) • Desktop Search • Green Computing • Window Management • Troubleshooting and Monitoring

  25. User Benefits: • Enormous Potential for Greater Productivity (smoother, more productive experience across the board) • Bring an open mind • Change: if you are willing to try to adapt your behavior, you will be more successful • Learning curve • You will need to invest a little effort to find the new features/stuff (if you are bound and determined to do things the way they are done in Windows XP, then stick with Windows XP) • One size does not fit all • Windows 7 will more then likely still have some annoyances, but hopefully those are fewer and less annoying than they were before

  26. Extra Information • Photo Gallery and Movie Maker • Not included in Windows 7; however, you can download them for free • They are now a part of the “LIVE” service of Microsoft (Windows Live Essentials) • http://download.live.com • This was done because Microsoft is trying to get away from cluttering a user’s machine and making the assumption that they will use their suites.

  27. Extra Information • Windows 7: System Requirements • http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/system-requirements.aspx • UND Microsoft Campus Agreement Program • Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007: System Requirements • http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/products/ha101668651033.aspx#8

  28. ANY Questions? Question: A curiosity, doubt, or statement inquiring about something. Often students will begin with who, what, where, when, why, or how.
