INTRODUCTION • Football is the most popular sport in Brazil • The Brazilian national football team has won the FIFA World Cup tournament a record 5 times • It has qualified for every World Cup competition. • Pelé is a very well known Brazilian footballer. • Current players include Cafu, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Kaká. • Football is taken very seriously in Brazil.

  3. HISTORY • Football was introduced to Brazil by a Scottish man. • 1880 Many European immigrants were working in the railway construction project in São Paulo. One of them sent his son, Charles Miller, to school in Southampton. He became a very good striker and played for Southampton FC. • On his return to Brazil he brought some football equipment and a rule book. He taught players at the São Paulo Athletic Club. • 1910 Team from Southampton travelled to Brazil to play against São Paulo Athletic Club and other clubs. • 1914 The Brazilian Football Confederation was founded.

CULTURE • Football quickly became a passion for Brazilians. • It is the favorite pastime and young people play football on the streets and indoor fields. • Brazil is a very big country divided in States and the Brazilian State Championships are very contested. • Brazilians are often not as big and strong as Europeans so they have developed a very quick and skillful football.
