  2. MUSICEducation! Who? Why?

  3. Who? • Schuylkill Valley School Board • Responsible for all activities in the Schuylkill Valley School District • Including the process of adding and removing classes • Problem • Schuylkill Valley School District must remove all classes • Now students sit in classrooms doing nothing all day = BORING • Why? State law says students must attend school until age 17 • Solution • Keep music class • Why? Students would not have to go to school and sit in classrooms doing nothing all day = NOT BORING

  4. Why? Cons Pros

  5. Pros • Music education integrates various aspects of learning together: math, reading, social interaction, and large and small motor skills • As a source of inspiration and self-expression, it can boost students’ self-esteem • Studies have proven that music stimulates areas of the brain that actually lead to improved problem solving and memorization skills

  6. Cons • Removal of music classes would result in lower participation in other aspects of school • Students who participate in the arts are 4x more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, 3x more likely to be elected to class office positions, and 4x more likely to participate in math and science fairs. • Music is a stress-reliever, so its elimination would lead to more aggravated students

  7. Conclusion • Based on this information, music education should not be removed from the school’s curriculum. It is a subject that actively works students’ minds and allows for self-expression and discovery, an emotional outlet that many young people in this troubling age group of constant change need.
