  1. The Holocaust

  2. Terms you need to know • Anti-Semetism: hostility or hatred towards Jews. • Aryan supremacy: people with the characteristics of blond hair and blue eyes are superior than all others. (Master race)

  3. What was the Holocaust? • The systematic attempt to rid Europe of all Jews. • Example of prejudice and discrimination taken to the extreme.

  4. What were their tactics? • Boycott of Jewish stores.

  5. What were their tactics? • Threats • Kristallnacht- “night of the shattered glass”; Jewish shop windows were broken by Nazi mobs.

  6. What were their tactics? 3. Segregation: forced them to wear a yellow, six pointed star on clothing; moved them to crowded all Jewish neighborhoods (ghettos)

  7. What were their tactics? • Imprisonment and killing of Jews and others in concentration camps and death camps. • “Final Solution” – answer to getting rid of all Jews in Europe (gas chamber, starvation, cruel experiments by Nazi doctors)

  8. First Hand Account of Massacre • “We marched into a forest where a huge long ditch was already dug…I could hear…a machine gun going…All of a sudden I saw my mother and four sisters lined up and before I had a chance to say, “Mother!” they were already dead. Somehow time stands still…But what woke mu was the sight of my five nieces and nephews being marched and the murderers had the audacity to ask them to hold hands…I would have been almost the next one but all of a sudden the bombers came over, we were ordered to lay face downwards, but everyone started running…and I…ran deep into the forest.

  9. How many were killed during the Holocaust? • Total: 11,ooo,ooo (11 million) • 6,000,000 (were Jews)

  10. In Germany they came first for the Communists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me-- and by that time no one was left to speak up. Final Words Pastor Martin Niemoller, Holocaust survivor
