Important Highlights of Battery Swapping Policy

Battery swapping is a method of replacing drained batteries with charged ones while retaining the ability to charge them independently. After taking into account all of the inputs received from relevant stakeholders, the NITI Aayog has finally drafted the battery swapping policy. You may read the policy here.

  1. Important Highlights from the Battery Swapping Policy Because long drives cannot be long enough to take humans to another planet with life, preventing climate change has become paramount. In the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) on Nov 21, India has committed to net-zero emissions by 2070. Consequently, we must take strides to decarbonize greenhouse gas emitting sectors such as conveyance and energy houses. The goal of carbon-free India has led to various initiatives by the government, such as FAME I and II, Production Linked Incentive (PLI), and more for battery manufacturing. Furthermore, initiatives are also taken by the state governments toward this mission. Indeed, a dense, inexpensive, and robust electric vehicle charging station network is needed for faster EV adoption. At the same time, battery swapping has emerged as a more feasible alternative. Let us understand how? The current setbacks and battery swapping ● EVs typically have fixed batteries that can only be recharged within the EV, leading to a major setback in the adoption by the masses. ● It also implies the long hours (minutes in the case of a DC fast charger)of charging time. 2-wheeler EVs and 3-wheeler EVs take a minimum of 3 to 4 hours to charge. While the EV charging network is still expanding, battery swapping can reduce downtime to some good extent.

  2. ● Unlike ICE fuel stations that can quickly fuel up several cars, EVs need to be parked for long, and to charge multiple EVs, you need multiple EV charging units in a large space. Battery swapping would bolster adoption while such networks develop in India. Battery swapping and its benefits Battery swapping involves changing an exhausted battery with a charged one so they can be charged each alternatively. It helps in keeping EVs operational for a long. However, battery swapping is only achievable with 2-wheeler EVs and 3-wheeler EVs. For 4-wheelers, buses, and trucks, advancements are being made for the same. As a result of the battery swapping policy, the projected benefits are: ● Time-saving or reducing downtime ● Cost-effectiveness ● And space. Policy objectives The national government announced intentions to propose a Battery Swapping Policy and interoperability standards in Budget 2022-2023, to expand and increase the efficiency of the battery swapping ecosystem and therefore encourage EV adoption. Here is an outline of the objectives: ● Encourage swapping of ACC batteries to separate battery costs at the time of Ev acquisition. ● Alternative to charging facilities. ● Ecosystem to enable interoperability of components. ● To gain exposure to affordable funding. ● Reinforce max utilization of batteries. ● Greater collaboration between battery manufacturers, battery suppliers, and other important partners like insurance and financing, resulting in establishing ecosystems capable of supplying comprehensive services to consumers. Policy overview ● Various technical and operational requirements are stated for the battery swapping ecosystem entities that need to be fulfilled. ● The policy entails ways for direct and indirect financial support from government agencies, PSEs to battery providers, and EV consumers to reduce the cost of EVs. ● The policy encourages de risked investments to promote the participation of private sectors in financing. ● Reinforces reuse and recycling of the batteries. ● Emphasize creating a unique battery code for ACC batteries. ● Explains framework for implementation of the battery swapping infrastructure.

  3. Final note The battery swapping policy by Niti Ayog is likely to open greater horizons in the adoption of EVs and the development of the EV ecosystem. This policy will bolster our endeavors as an EV infrastructure company in India, providing a reliable fast-charging station and battery stations. Follow Us: Facebook | Instagram | LinkedIn
