SWAPWest • Established in 1987 • Aim: to widen access to higher education (post school) for adults • A consortium of post school institutions (colleges and Universities) • Adults > 21 yrs old with little or no formal education • Disadvantaged (single parents, unemployed, persons with disabilities, women returners, ethnic groups) Caspan and Introduction to SWAPWest

Scottish Education • Scottish Lifelong Learning provision is based on: • Need to ensure the skills demand in Scotland are met • Reflect the current economic situation • Avoid duplication in public spending to maximise efficiency • Ensure that the workforce has the appropriate skills base to meet future demands. • The Lifelong Learning sector, in Scotland, comprises of: • Further education Colleges • Higher education institutions • Community provision • Voluntary sector • All use a variety of instruments, methods and outcomes to provide a service to the adult community Caspan and Introduction to SWAPWest

What do we do? • Facilitate programmes for progression. • Variety of programmes – Health, nursing, science, humanities • Provide guidance to all Access students – written and through presentations • Introduction • Study skills • Progression and university applications • Provide staff development for Access staff in our partners institutions • Marketing Caspan and Introduction to SWAPWest

Staff and how are we funded? • 1 Full-time director • 2 part-time development officers • 2 part-time administrators • 1 very part-time senior development officer • Partner subscriptions • Central funding (Scottish Higher Education Funding Council) • Projects • Contracts Caspan and Introduction to SWAPWest

  10. Success • In 24 years of operation • >14000 students • 78% No qualifications above school leaving • ~ 70% successfully complete • 42% from most deprived areas • 55 % had no formal family experience of HE Caspan and Introduction to SWAPWest

Andrew • Lecturer in School of Engineering and Built Environment, Glasgow Caledonian University • Senior development officer (seconded ½ day per week) • Andrew, worked with SWAPWest since 1992 • BP project (full-time 3 years) • Secured Lottery and European funding • Since 2004, 4 European Learning partnerships • Current responsibilities • Science and Engineering • European work. Caspan and Introduction to SWAPWest

Helen • Has taught in Further Education for 28 years • Worked on widening participation projects for 4 years • Delivered leadership and management training including coaching and mentoring to FE staff for 5 years • Recently joined SWAPWest to lead European Social Fund (ESF) Projects Caspan and Introduction to SWAPWest

  14. Helen • Lives in Stirling • Plays dreadful tennis • Swims regularly and rides a bicycle short distances on level ground • Belongs to a Book Group • Enjoys cooking and eating the food • Married with 3 grown-up children Caspan and Introduction to SWAPWest
