  1. Oral Book Report Format 8-10 Minutes Long Make sure you practice timing yourself Use a mirror to practice Eye contact with audience is important

  2. Card # 1 • Faraway Home • Marilyn Taylor • True story • 210 pages • It took place from 1938-1941 in Northern Ireland and Austria.

  3. Card # 2 The book is based on true events. It is describing experiences of young refugees who come to a farm. Which is in Northern Ireland during World War 2. It also is about how the Nazis treated the people.

  4. Card # 3, 4, and 5 When the Muller family, Uncle Rudi, Papa, Mama,Grandma,13 year old Karl, younger sister Rosa, and Goldie(the dog) were eating dinner one night the Nazis busted into their apartment. They were going to take Papa and Uncle Rudi. Uncle Rudi would not go so they shot him, the blood trickled down his face. They brought Papa somewhere and dragged Uncle Rudi to the streets. He saw some Nazis kicking old women so he yelled, "stop”!! Because of what he did they sent him to Nazi camp. Weeks passed and grandma started to worry. Finally Uncle Rudi came home. He could barely talk and his clothes were all ripped up. He will never be himself again. When Papa came home he said, 'the Nazis made him scrub the streets. The Nazis killed so many people and invaded so many homes that Karl's parents had to send Rosa and Karl to Northern Ireland on a kinder transport by themselves. They were going to live with a different family until their parents come. Once Rosa and Karl got to Ireland they met a nice man named Mr. freeman. He was going to take care of Karl. Karl had to live on a farm with a boy named Danny and a girl named Eva. But Rosa is going to live with the Gould's because Mr. Freeman and Karl thought that it would be the best thing to do. Karl had to build a farm with Danny, Eva, and Mr. Freeman. They had to sleep in the barn that night and it rained so they soaking wet. A girl named Judy came to the farm to help months after Karl had. One year passed and Karl’s parents still didn’t come. Karl was becoming very homesick that he started to cry during church. He got a letter from his parents saying that grandma is very confused, she is saying that grandpa is still alive. Also she is saying that Uncle Rudi and Papa are still children. Some more bad news is that Nazis made a rule that Jews pets would be taken away and destroyed. Rosa and Karl loved Goldie ,their pet dog. Also Uncle Rudi took his life while his mind was disturbed and in despair. The next day Karl went to the hospital to see Rosa. When the Gould's were taking care of Rosa they thought it would be a good idea to go ice skating, but Rosa fell and broke her ankle. Because of what happened to Rosa, Karl insisted that Rosa comes to live with him on the farm. Judy and Karl became friends. But then Judy had to go back to her home to live with her family again. Everyone on the farm was going to miss her.

  5. Card # 6,7, and 8 Karl and Judy were writing letters to each other. Judy said that she asked her mom and dad if she could come back to the farm in a few months and they said it would be all right. When Judy came to the farm she found out that Karl was not talking to anyone for a couple weeks. Judy found out by talking to Karl. He said, "his parents have been deported maybe to a prison camp where his Uncle Rudi was killed”. Karl said that he had a plan to help them. The plan was that tomorrow night after Passover meal , he was going to England. Karl was running away. With his ATC training he could lie about his age and might get into the Air Force. Then he could help to sop the Nazis and what they were doing. Karl and Judy would ride their bikes across the country to Lisburn, which is about 25 miles away. They would catch the early-morning train to Dublin. Judy would bring him to her house and some how cross to the air force. Karl's plan was working until they stopped to rest half way there. They stopped to eat sandwiches and apples when the air-raid warning went off. They thought it was a practice drill until planes flew over their heads. They were bombers. They had bombed the city and there were many fires. Finally Karl said that they should go back to the farm. He said that he must've gone mad to think of an idea like that. When they got to the town there were people sobbing because 15 men had been wounded and 10 have been killed. Seconds later Karl saw Rosa running across the cobbles toward them.

  6. Card 9 I am doing a TRUE ADVENTURE. What makes my book a true adventure is Karl and Rosa had to live with complete strangers and live in a very different country than what he use to live in. Also what makes it a true adventure is Karl ran away from the farm and almost entered the Air Force. The time in history was in the late 1940’s and when World War 2 was going on with Hitler. The real events were when the Nazis were attacking people and places.

  7. Cards 10, 11, and 12 Personality Trait # 1 Karl is trustworthy because when his parents sent him letters they told him not to tell Rosa these things because she is too young. And Karl never told her. He is also trustworthy because Mr. Freeman had some rules that Karl never broke. Personality Trait # 2 Karl also is honorable because when Judy asked who his old friend Lisl was, he didn’t lie about her, even though it was hard to talk about it. Also when he wrote to his parents and told them that Rosa is not living with him, which they were suppose to stick together. Personality Trait # 3 Karl is sympathetic because when a boy from the farm fond out his brother died from Nazis he feels bad for him. Karl also knows how he feels because his Uncle Rudi died. And when Judy says she feels homesick. Karl feels the same way because he has not been at his house for one year and has not seen his family for 1 year also.

  8. Card 13 I learned that people lived in fear for themselves and family at this time. A lot of people lived on farms and some moved from place to place. No, I would not want to live in this time because I wouldn’t have freedom. One advantage is that people would look out for each other. Some disadvantages are people don’t have as much freedom and family's could be sent to prison camp.

  9. Card 14 • Author’s Purpose I think that the authors purpose was to tell the reader what it was like during and in World War 2. Also what life was like back then. The Nazis treated the people horribly because they would bust into their house and take the useful people to do things for them like they did in the beginning.

  10. Card # 15 I liked the book because it was interesting to learn about World War 2 and how the people lived. But I disliked the book because it was sad to read how the people were treated and because at the end of the book they didn’t tell me what happened to their family, if they survived or died. But overall I liked the book. I think that people that like to read about World War 2 and like to read about the past would appeal to them the most.
