The LandWater Systems • Water Systems consist of many rivers running through mainland • Small creeks and streams are the general water supply for the public • Lake Paravani is the largest lake in Georgia • There are several other lakes in Georgia • Georgian wetlands harbor high number of waterbirds, otters, and fish

  4. Native Wildlife • In the Northeastern Caucasus Mountain regions, visitors can find chamois, bezoar goat, wolves, bears, rare Caucasian tur, and even mountain leopards

  5. Government • Executive Branch - chief of state and cabinet. • Elections determined by popular vote for 5 year term • Government type – Republic • Capital - T'bilisi • Independence - 9 April 1991 (from the Soviet Union) • Constitution - adopted 24 August 1995 • Legal System - based on civil law system • Suffrage - 18 years of age; universal

  7. Current Event • Officials announce scheme to let prisoners shorten jail time • Churches have started allowing prisoners to serve part of their jail time as monks instead • Incarnation has risen 300% since 2004 • Jails are becoming overcrowded
