  1. THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS

  2. THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS • WHAT DOES OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH SAY? We believe that the Holy Spirit sovereignly bestows spiritual gifts upon all believers for the purpose of the edification of the Body and the maturation of the believer. We believe that the temporary, revelatory, sign gifts have ceased with the completion of the Canon. Therefore, there are no longer prophets and apostles either! (1 Cor.13:8,10; Eph.2:19-22; Heb.2:3,4;)

  3. THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS • WHAT DOES OUR STATEMENT OF FAITH SAY? We believe that speaking in tongues was never the common or necessary sign of the baptism nor of the filling of the Spirit, and that the deliverance of the body from sickness or death awaits the consummation of our salvation in the resurrection. (Acts 4:8,31; Rom.8:23). We believe that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith, in accord with His own will, for the sick and afflicted.

  6. THE 5 LAWS OF SUFFERING

  7. THE 5 LAWS OF SUFFERING 1. LAW 1: THERE ARE 2 CLASSIFICATIONS OF SIN 1.1. ORIGINAL SIN • Roman 5:12 • Sin nature traced back to Adam in Genesis 3 • We are all born into this world with sinful nature • Result: suffering, sickness and death introduced into the human race • This is original sin 1.2. PERSONAL SIN • Individual acts of wrong that we commit • Because we have inherited the old sin nature, we commit sin • Because we are sinners by birth, we become sinners by choice. • Instead of obeying, we disobey • Instead of choosing Christ, we choose to run away from Him

  8. THE 5 LAWS OF SUFFERING LAW 2: ORIGINAL SIN INTRODUCED SUFFERING, ILLNESS, AND DEATH TO THE HUMAN RACE • Romans 5:12b • Had Adam never sinned, there would have been no original sin, therefore no sickness or death. • So in a broad sense, all sickness and suffering and death is a result of original sin. • Therefore, nobody is immune from sin and its consequences...it’s the source of sickness, suffering and death.

  9. THE 5 LAWS OF SUFFERING LAW 3: SOMETIMES THERE IS A DIRECT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERSONAL SINS AND SICKNESS • Psalm 32:3-5 • Psalm 38:3-5 • David: his unconfessed sin made him ill • Direct relationship between his personal sin and the physical and emotional sickness that impacted his life. • 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 • Some of the Corinthian believers were weak and sick and a number of them were even dead because they were sinning. • NB Confession of sin begins the process of healing.

  10. THE 5 LAWS OF SUFFERING LAW 4: SOMETIMES THERE IS NO RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PERSONAL SINS AND SICKNESS • See John 9:1-3 • Some people may be born with afflictions/sickness • Suffering even before they could even start sinning • What about Job: upright, in God’s will, yet endured suffering of the worst kind • Be careful what we say to people who are ill: are you sure there isn’t something wrong in your life?” • In many cases, suffering or illness does not have to be the result of personal sin.

  11. THE 5 LAWS OF SUFFERING LAW 5: IT IS NOT GOD’S WILL THAT EVERYONE BE HEALED • So many Christians believe that all sickness and suffering is from the devil, and therefore it is God’s will that everyone must be healed. • God has not promised to heal in every case; therefore, healing is not something we can demand from Him. In Phi_2:27, healing is spoken of as a mercy, not something which we have a right to expect. • It is not true that failure to be healed indicates a lack of faith. • There is NO physical healing in the atonement

  12. THE 5 LAWS OF SUFFERING WHILE WE HAVE JUST SAID IT IS NOT GOD’S WILL THAT EVERYONE BE HEALED, IT ALSO MEANS THAT SOMETIMES IT IS GOD’S WILL THE SOMEONE IS HEALED!
