  2. Talking and Driving can Lead to this… • There are over 200 deaths from accidents so far this year involving cell phones. There are also thousands of injuries from the same type of accidents.- says Rose Richmond, freelance writer for Yahoo Voice.

  3. Personally Related to Talking and Driving • I catch myself either answering a phone call or looking at a text message. • Takes my eyes off the road for at least 9 seconds. • Distracts me and makes me an unsafe driver to those around me.

  4. Rose Richmond’s Accident • Rose had her grandchildren in the back seat while driving her husbands truck. • They were driving through an intersection after stopping at a stop sign. • A man speaking on his cell phone was in deep conversation, paying no attention to the stop sign and crashed straight into Rose. Her grandchildren were not hurt but were sore from the accident.

  5. Reason 1- Just like Driving Intoxicated • Distraction from cell phone use while driving (hand held or hands free) extends a driver's reaction as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. (University of Utah)

  6. Cont… • The law bans drinking and driving, so why not talking and driving? Talking on a hand-held cell phone while driving is banned in 10 states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Washington, and West Virginia) and the District of Columbia. • Being more cautious could save you your life.

  7. Reason 2- More Likely to Crash • Drivers that use cell phones are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. (NHTSA, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)

  8. Cont… • Driving while distracted is a factor in 25 percent of police reported crashes. • 10 percent of drivers aged 16 to 24 years old are on their phone at any one time while driving.

  9. Reason 3- Decrease Brain Activity • Driving while using a cell phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent (Carnegie Mellon) • This condition has been labeled as “inattentive blindness.”

  10. Remember? • Talking while driving is like driving intoxicated. • You are more likely to get into a car accident causing injury. • Decreases brain activity while driving.
