  2. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell • With theestablishment of the Conservation Committee in 1982, approximately 12 hygrothermographs were purchased. • The photo at the right depicts the type of hygrothermographs which was commonly used at Cornell during this period. 4. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell • In 1985, John Dean was appointed as Conservation Librarian and so began the Preservation & Conservation Program at Cornell.

  5. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell In 1990 I was appointed as Conservation Liaison. Among my duties were the maintenance, repair and distribution of information captured by the existing hygrothermographs. High cost of upkeep includes the purchase of • Weekly charts for hygrothermographs 100/pk @ $50. • Replacement pens 2/set all hygrothermographs @ $50. • Purchase of a sling psychrometer price varies between $100-$200 depending on brand and size. • Extra wicks for the sling psychrometer 12/pk @ $20. Sling Psychrometer Weekly Charts

  6. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell Difficulties with the maintenance of hygrothermographs: • Require staff commitment to regularly change the charts and calibrate the units. • Expense of both equipment and staff time involved. Thermohygrometer Kit

  7. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell • After 2 years of struggling with staff maintenance issues, I began the process of researching the availability of electronic sensors to replace the hygrothermographs. • Based on operating costs we were able to purchase electronic dataloggers. We chose the ACR Dataloggers supplied by the Cascade Group, Oyster Bay, NY. Website: http://www.temprh.com/ • A laptop used for downloading information in the field, then it is transferred to a desktop, charts are edited for uniformity and then distributed to corresponding curators and facilities personnel. 9. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell • Early 1999 - Research begins to find Web based datalogger. • 1999/2000 - Prototype tested by Cornell. • Spring 2000 - Internet Dataloggers placed at Cornell. • May 19, 2000 - Announcement of availability was made on the Cons Dist List. • January 2001 - New York State Library, Archives, and Museum purchased 60 loggers from Pinnacle toward establishing a comprehensive and networked monitoring system.

  11. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell Taken directly from Pinnacle’s Web Page: Features: · Temperature and Relative Humidity Datalogger · Ethernet Interface · 2 to 30 minute sampling increment · 20,000+ samples NonVolatile Storage · Real Time Clock with Battery Backup and Automatic Synchronization ·Optional Water Alarm

  12. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell Web Based Operator Interface: · Text and Graphical Display of Logged Data · Remote Data Access via the Web · Serial Port Interface for Configuration and Set-Up · Ethernet Interface for LAN, WAN connection Accuracy: · Temp: +- 1 deg F from 0 deg F to 150 deg F · Relative Humidity: +- 2% from 0% to 98% @ 25C Non-Condensing (NIST Traceable)

  13. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell Advantages of Internet Dataloggers for libraries: • Simple installation. • No special software needed to view or save results. • Requires an ethernet jack and electrical outlet. • Limits can be set for both upper and lower temperatures and relative humidity. • Machine generated “trouble tickets” sent via Email using predetermined notification list. Email alerts are sent to predetermined personnel until unit returns to correct settings (i.e. corrective measures are made to system).

The current relative humidity is 54%.

  15. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell Advantages of Internet Dataloggers for libraries cont’d: • Accessible from anywhere in the world via the Internet. • Works in real time. • Easy visual online graphing. • Easy downloads and compatible with Excel for permanent graphing is desired.

  16. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell Setup screens are done through a 3rd party software called Tera Term Pro. Shareware available at: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002416/teraterm.html Sample of setup of one of our Internet Dataloggers.

  20. Evolution of Environmental Monitoring at Cornell • As with any new technology there have been a few minor problems, but Pinnacle is an excellent support firm and the problems have been swiftly addressed. • A few software upgrades have already been down to ensure accurate and smooth operation of the units. • Originally released as “ezLoggers” they have been renamed to Internet Datalogger/TRH (ID/TRH).
