  3. Program Convenor Dr Bobae Choi The Program Convenor is the academic staff member with overall responsibility for the management and quality of your program. Contact me for advice on academic matters, including career advice and course recommendations to suit your interests and study plans.

  4. Academic Articulation Student Liaison Officer Dr Fred Chao Fred meets all students during orientation week and assists and advises articulation students with regards to academic issues, including identifying support available and making the appropriate referrals. He advocates on behalf of articulation students and makes recommendations to the Faculty to ensure continued superior support to them.

  5. Program Advisor A Program Advisor has thorough knowledge of a degree program. Your Program Advisor can help you ensure that you are following the requirements and structure of your degree program.   6. Course Coordinator A  Course Coordinator is responsible for organising one or more individual courses (subjects). You will have a different Course Coordinator for each course you are enrolled in, and examples of areas for which they are responsible include course content, adverse circumstances, and grades. Program Advisor and Student Advisor A Program Advisor has thorough knowledge of a degree program. Your Program Advisor can help you ensure that you are following the requirements and structure of your degree program. You should contact your Program Advisor if you have any administrative enquiries about your degree. Student Advisors are part of the Student Advice Team and are located in Student Central locations. They assist you to navigate UON policies and procedures and the free services to support you during your study.

Semester Study Load Full-time study = Domestic Students: Enrolled in 30 units or more per semesteror enrolled in a total of 60 units or more in that academic year International Students: Enrolled in 40 units per semester Part-time study = Domestic Students: 10 – 20 units per semester International Students: Should enroll full-time. Meet with a Student Advisor or visit Student Central if you want to vary your course load Every 10 unit course requires 10 hours study per week

Terminology Core Courses = courses that everyone studying the program MUST complete Major = a structured sequence of courses providing specialised knowledge in a particular study area a course chosen from within a list or group of courses. A directed course list may be attached to a program, or a specialisation within a program Directed Course = Elective = any unrestricted course in the University

  9. Majors – choose 1 or 2 Accounting Example careers: Accountant, Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA), Forensic Accountant, Management Accountant. Economics Example careers: Economist, Financial Analyst, Investment Banker, Stockbroker. Finance Example careers: Finance Manager, Financial Analyst, Investment Banker, Mortgage Broker, Stockbroker.

  10. Program Plan A Program Plan outlines the structure of your degree. It is designed to provide you with an easy to follow plan you can use to check that you are on track with your degree, and help you choose courses that will be appropriate for your program.

  16. UONCapture uonline.newcastle.edu.au UONCapture is the University's platform for recording classes and other teaching resources. Timetabled lectures conducted in equipped classrooms will be recorded. To access these recordings, please log into UONlineand visit your course site. Then, click the UONCapture link at the bottom of your course menu to access recordings.

Textbooks • The Course Outline will list what textbooks are prescribed which means it is recommended to buy if you can • Blackboard will advise if there are readings you need to complete before Week 1 • New textbooks can be purchased at the Co-op Bookshop at the Callaghan campus • For 2nd hand textbooks look on noticeboards, studentvip.com.au – make sure to check the edition

How to manage your assessment schedule • Use a diary • Use a wall planner (grab a free wall planner at the Orientation Expo or from Student Central) • Look at the due date and count backwards to work out when you need to start assignments • App to remind you when things are due • Whatever works for you, there is no right or wrong

What to expect in your first semester - tips from a current student • Work starts before Week 1 – it is important to keep up but you should still go to class if you have not completed that week’s reading or task • Assignments may be due the same day or week • Better to show up late to class than not at all • There are three weeks of exams after Week 13, your exams could be scheduled on any day of the exam period, don’t book a holiday during exams • You’ll go through ups and downs – excitement, followed by self-doubt, followed by confidence • Don’t be afraid to ask for help – knowing what you don’t know is a valuable skill

  22. Are you eligible for credit? • If you have studied at another institution you may be eligible for credit. • For advice, talk to your Program Advisor Credit information for current students

  24. Study Overseas • BUSN3600 International Study Experience • Go on exchange for 1 or 2 semesters and receive credit towards your degree – 120 countries to choose from

  25. Honours • Dr Ros Larkin is the Course Coordinator • Honours is an additional year at the end of your degree. • Students who graduate with an Honours degree are highly valued in the employment market. • Honours graduates stand out from the crowd.

  27. Emergencies • When alarm sounds, leave immediately using the nearest safe exit.​ • Do not use elevators or lifts.​ • Follow directions of Emergency Wardens, Security or Emergency Services. • Proceed in an orderly manner to assembly point and wait. ​ • Remain at assembly point until all clear is given. ​ • Do not re-enter the building until permitted to do so by an authorised official. • Look at the Evacuation plans – these are on the walls in the buildings check your assembly point.​ • The Assembly Point for NewSpace is Wheeler Place.​ • If you’re aware of personal difficulties in responding to an emergency, speak to your course coordinator about a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan.

  28. First Aid First aid kits are located in all work areas. This includes on all floors of NewSpace. All Security Officers are first Aid trained, call 4921 7962 or notify a staff member. Incident and Hazard Reporting Contact Security Services for any immediate risks to the health and safety of a person or people. Security are present 24/7. Report all injuries, illnesses, hazards and near misses to a UON staff member or your course coordinator, supervisor or lecturer.

  29. Working Late & Staying Safe • Park your car close if driving. • Move to levels G, 1 or 2 which are patrolled by Security. • Leave with a companion if possible. • Report to Security if you have concerns.

  30. Checklist for first day at uni • Organised a student card? • Organised a parking permit or know which bus to catch? • Know where your classroom is? • Have you checked the text book list? • Lap top, tablet or notebook
