  4. AMERICAN ARRIVAL The African slaves were then sent to various parts of the colonies to perform hard manual labor. Work and treatment varied according to where the slaves were sent.

  7. SOUTHERN REGION • More slaves lived in the South than in any other region. • Slaves worked on farming estates called plantations. • Slaves lived in overcrowded cabins.

  8. SOUTHERN REGION • Owners hired “overseers” to mange slave production. They were often poor white immigrants. • The major cash crops were: cotton, rice, tobacco, and indigo.

  9. SOUTHERN REGION Slaves were often: • Whipped • Raped • Castrated/maimed as a means of control

  11. SOUTHERN REGION The majority of slaves worked in the fieldsbut SOME worked in the house for the slave-owner. THIS CAUSED MUCH TENSION & ANIMOSITY BETWEEN THE SLAVES

  12. house slave vs field slave • Worked as nannies to raise the children • Worked as maids and cooks for the master • Worked as butlers to serve guest • worked for up to 18 hours in the fields • often had no shoes • Had to provide evidence of how much work was done

  16. Slave food? While house slaves mainly ate leftovers from the master ; the field slaves created dishes from the leftover scraps of the animals used.
